Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 20 Pack:

I used these tablets for the first time this Summer and have to say that I'm extremely impressed. They are effective against everything and really easy to use. Iodine is too messy but these tablets are simply awesome.

The only problem with using tablets is that solid matter will also make it inside the container. It will be disinfected but still be there. Using a coffee filter will take care of that. The 4 hours only applies to effectiveness against crypto so don't be put off by that. Iodine isn't effective against crypto in the first place.

I'm leaving the water filter at home from now on. It is simply too bulky and heavy if these paperweight and super-small tablets are just effective. Simply fill up a liter of water and pop one of these tablets in. They dissolve by themselves super fast. I found that with planning the 4 hour wait time is not a big deal. Treat your water at night before sleeping and your water will be ready. As you use up water you can treat some more for later use. I'm sold on these tablets.

Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 20 Pack:

Why fuss with a filter and carry the extra weight ? These are the ultimate in simplicity and ultralight. Saves bulk in the pack as well. There's definitely an odor but that can be outgassed by cracking the lid of your Nalgene while you do other things in camp. Smell dissipates and there is no noticeable taste. Water tastes clean and pure. Another bonus is that chlorine dioxide is the same thing Camelbak uses in their cleaning tablets....so your treated water keeps your hydration bladder from going biological on long treks.

Great to add to any backcountry first aid kit. With a little bit of planning the 4 hour wait is not a big deal. Colorless, odorless, and tasteless so it works better than most filters and weighs next to nothing.

Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 20 Pack:

No clogged filter! No pumping! So it takes 4 hours for a complete kill, but if you plan ahead - always having one bottle for drinking while one is filtering - the times goes fast. Unlike the 'drops' method, the result is colorless, odorless, tasteless. Best part is that the tablets weigh next to nothing and take even less space in your pack than your toothbrush.

Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 20 Pack:

I read these reviews and thought i'd give it a try. I tasted no aftertaste. I handed my friends a bottle and told them to try it without saying anything. After convincing them I didn't do anything bad to it they tried it and noticed nothing. Great. These are definitely replacing my water filter on the next hike. 1lb gone.

Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 20 Pack:

If you plan to be breaking through the ice to take your water from a mud puddle then let the tablets work the full 4 hours. If you are planning on purifying water that is warmer or clearer than that, give Katadyn a call and discuss their recommendations.

Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 20 Pack:

These tablets kill Giardia in 30 minutes. However, it is 4+ hours for Cryptosporidium, a nasty amoeba.

From Katadyn: "Destroys viruses and bacteria in 15 min., Giardia in 30 min. and Cryptosporidium in 4 hrs."

A pump is going to remove all of the above. After our pump clogged on the JMT we used these tabs for 5 days and waited the 4 hours; this meant I carried 3+ liters of water most of the time, which was a real pain. (When you're hiking 8+ hours, with water available irregularly, you will need more than one bottle percolating at a time) Neither my wife nor I agree the tab treated water was tasteless – there was, in our opinion, a distinct chlorine taste and we were very happy to get back to our pump.

Worst of all, 3 or 4 of the tabs were duds (i.e. no fizz, no slight discoloration or chlorine odor typical of the other working tabs)

Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 20 Pack:

I bought these so I wouldn't have to carry as much "backup" water on hikes near streams. The benefits are obvious, one tablet is significantly lighter than the liter of water it can treat, they're easy to use, compact, and much cheaper than a filter. The only big con is really the smell. After 30 minutes in a sealed bottle, it smells strongly like pool water. If you leave the bottle open for a while this lessens. I tried a few sips from a purified bottle after 8 hours just for kicks, and the smell was pretty much gone by then. The taste really isn't bad, in fact I think it's the smell that's tricking some folks' taste buds. I mean it's no Dasani or Britta filtered water, but it's not BAD. Tastes pretty much like municipal water. It's not great, but it's completely palatable. Definitely better than getting sick or dehydrated.

If I were going on a trip where I actually planned on collecting water, I'd probably look into a filter just for the more pleasant odor. But again, those are expensive. For now, this is an easy to use lightweight emergency backup.

I gave this five stars because I went into the purchase knowing that the water would smell and taste a little "funny" with any tablet, so I can't really complain. Mine actually came in a greenish tan foil by the way, not the silver shown. Not sure if that's of any significance.
