Comments about SteriPEN Water Purifier:
Used for first time on a 42 mile hike in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This thing is awesome! I can see needing some type of prefilter if you had anything too dirty. But as for weight, ease of operation and speed, nothing compares. I would advise using lithium batteries though. We filtered around 5-6 gallons on a set of 4 AA alkaline batteries. As for clean-up, wipe the bulb and "electrodes" off and you are good to go. If it's not working right...it's the batteries!

Comments about SteriPEN Water Purifier:
I bought this as a lighter alternative to a carrying a pump in my day pack. Since water is the heaviest thing I carry, this enables me to carry a VERY light water filter and also reduce the amount of water I carry.
The bummer is no mechanical filtration, so you need to have a relatively clean source of water such as a clear mountain stream. I wouldn't use in a lake or pound. But if you have clear water, this thing kills all the bad bugs. And no pumping. YEAH!
Also a great use in international travel.
Get NiMh rechargable batteries.

Comments about SteriPEN Water Purifier:
Love this improvement over typical pump filters. Qualifies as a purifier too I believe.
Had a bit of trouble getting started (didn't read directions, and was inserting it in water too early). But then off to the races.
Love not having to paddle canoe or drift while filtering water with kids in boat. Love not having to keep clean hose and "dirty" hose from getting mixed up or dropping clean hose in lake by mistake.
Just have kids scoop a couple water bottles full of lake water. Then, in boat or on shore, stick this baby in the water bottle and 90 seconds later you have a cool beverage ready to go!
Only complaint is that I need to keep it dry while boating, so have to have a dry seal bag for it, etc. Maybe the adventure version is waterproof?
Minor issue is that battery compartment cover seems a bit precarious. Time will tell how long it lasts, but so far one season down - hopefully many more to go!

Comments about SteriPEN Water Purifier:
This was a great filter on a trip to South America. We traveld all throug Peru, Columbia and even spent a week traveling by boat up the Amazon. This filter worked great and allowed us to have clean water when we were in remote parts of the country.
Used it on a day hike up half dome with a goup of 11 people and this was the only filter there. Did about 15 liters of water in no time at all.
Get the nimh batteris, its worth the investment.
I would like it to be a little smaller, they didn't have the other version when I got this one.

So simple even my kids use. Choose the classic with the AA batteries are these are easier to get hold off and you are more likely to be carrying spares for a torch etc. hassle free clean drinking water in seconds !

Comments about SteriPEN Water Purifier:
Echos of all the positives already stated.Would recommend using pre-filter to filter sediment and enhance efficiencyI saw a solar powered recharger to accompany this but I can't find it anymore [...]?! Solar power would definitely improve the system so no/little batteries would be needed.

Comments about SteriPEN Water Purifier:
Traveling up river in the jungles of Honduras with very little fresh clean water made this a very importan piece of gear in my backpack. I like the fact that I did not need a lot of extas, just 4 double AA batteries and I was ready to sterilize my water. Plus I did not have to mix anything or wait 4hours for my water to be ready.
Do not forget when your at home and you have had a storm you can use the Steri Pen to make sure your water has not been contaminated.

Comments about SteriPEN Water Purifier:
I took the filter to China. It was so easy to pack in my cosmetic bag. I always had clean water; never had to purchase any. I previously used a squeeze filtration bottle. It was bulky and hardly held any water. I would stick with a pump type filter for backpacking, since it's better suited to filter out sediment.

Comments about SteriPEN Water Purifier:
I have a bad reaction to bugs in the water; most people have no symptoms from most bugs but not me. I used this in tandem with another filter to help avoid the nasty bugs this year and it worked.

Comments about SteriPEN Water Purifier:
This was the single worst filtration product on the market. It is very unreliable, and only worked a small fraction of the time. I was glad we had a back up plan (boiling!!!!). I immediatly returned this product and wrote a letter to the company. I would not recommend this product to anyone. When your health depends on sterile water DO NOT depend on this product
