Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 30 Pack:

I use this product as a backup in-case my filter stops functioning, or if the water is particularly scary. However, the last time I took these out of my little emergency kit, I saw that about half of them had been crushed and in powder form they had broken through small holes the shards poked in the foil. Fine product, but being something so critical as water treatment for backpackers, they should come in a slightly more durable container, something that can hold up to the pressure of being packed snugly and the possibility of water saturation.

If you're planning on using these exclusively, do yourself a favor and find some sort of hard case to put them.

Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 30 Pack:

This is like municipal water smells, but stronger. I had to hold my nose at first. I've been told to leave bottles sitting open after the contact time is up to let some of the gas escape. I'll try that next time.

You only need the long, 4 hour contact time if you think you have cryptosporidium to kill. Generally rangers/locals should know whether there is crypo in the area.

These weigh nothing, so they would be good for ultralight or as a backup in case the filter breaks.

Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 30 Pack:

I carry these as a back-up, in case of filter problems, which has happened to me several times (including yesterday!). Never gotten sick afterwards, and, in a few instances, would have been in serious trouble without clean water. So, as a safety/backup measure, these are awesome.

On the other hand, I am very surprised to read reviews saying there's no aftertaste. Every time I've used these, the water has had a nauseatingly strong taste of chlorine. Not like tap-water, but like diluted bleach: completely disgusting.

Anyway, a great item to throw into your survival kit, just in case.

Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 30 Pack:

Just used these guys to purify creek water on a two-day hike in West Virginia and loved them. Yeah, sure, there's a clear chlorine taste--strong enough to notice but not enough to disgust--but anything short of dog poo is well worth not having to carry an extra fifteen pounds of water. Anyone particularly sensitive (probably aren't hiking much anyway) can just buy some Crystal Light or Propel mix to spice it up. Just buy them. You won't regret it.

                THE BEST!!

Buy this over the potable aqua tablets hands down. Those tablets taste absolutely horrid, and they don't kill chriptosporidium (sp?). These tabs do, and they also don't taint the taste of the water at all... in fact I personally think they make the water taste more pure. I prefer this water to my local tap water, and cannot recommend these tablets highly enough. Pony up the extra 6 dollars and don't suffer through another backpacking adventure ruined by water that tastes like it came from a cow's intestine.

Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 30 Pack:

I have been using Micropur as my primary treatment method for over a year now. It is obviously very light and easy to use, with the exception that the foil packs are a little hard to open - I recommend a small scissors like on a multi-tool or knife.

I typically only wait 30 minutes unless the water source is really suspect. The only time that I have noticed the taste is when the water is warm. For those cases where taste is an issue, I am planning to add a Aquimira Frontier Pro Filter to my setup - the activated carbon will eliminate most taste.

This product is also a good purifier supplement to knock viruses out of pump filtered water, which only takes 15 minutes.

Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 30 Pack:

A great water purification product. I've used these chlorine dioxide tablets for years, and have never gotten sick using them. I backpack 1 to 4 nights per month, usually in the NC mountains. I've gotten sick drinking this water through a pur filter before, but never with using these tablets alone. I don't wait 4 hours, usually only 30 min.

Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 30 Pack:

I always carry these with me, and used them in a setting when I was out of water and had about 7 miles to go, much of it steep (I'd gotten a bit lost and spent quite a bit more time than expected on the hike). I could have made it out without extra water, but it would have been pretty uncomfortable, so I decided to treat the water for an hour and take my chances. The water had no noticeable taste, and I didn't get sick. So while I certainly wouldn't recommend drinking it without the 4 hour wait, I can vouch for the taste, and definitely recommend it for emergency use (or if you can treat water overnight for the next day.)

Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 30 Pack:

I wanted to comment further on flying with this product. I'm leading a trip to India soon and after reading all the comments here and elsewhere had decided that this was the product that worked the best for my group. But the message about the TSA not allowing the tablets onboard was worrisome. I contacted the company (Katadyn) about this. Katadyn argues that the TSA makes exceptions for prohibited items that could be considered "medicinal," and because Micropur "is used to make unsafe water safe to drink to prevent disease from waterborne organisms," it would fall under this category.

I thought this might be helpful to others who might be considering the product.

Comments about Katadyn Micropur - 30 Pack:

Compared to the bulkiness of a filter, this product is a great weight & space saver in your pack. Used the tabs for a weeklong backpacking trip along a section of the Colorado trail and never experienced any taste problem and very little odor. Small tabs are easy to misplace if you don't keep an organized pack. A little planning avoids problems with the 4-hour wait period. One step treatment process very convenient. These tabs will make it hard to go back to carrying a filter except when sediment may be a problem.
