by Carl and SarahfromBest. Base-layer. Ever. Almost.I'd read so many good things about merino wool products for hiking that I finally broke-down and spent the money (a lot of it). I was heading to Nepal for a 2-week trek to Mt. Everest (base camp), so I purchased this this SmartWool crew as a base (and also a SmartWool hoodie to use as a middle layer). As we got to higher altitudes it was cold, all the time, so I put this top on and never took it off. I wore it hiking; I wore it sitting around the tea houses; and I wore it to sleep, for a solid week. It was warm, it was soft (yes, wool, was not scratchy), and much to my surprise and delight, it did not smell either! On one of our hikes I was only wearing this merino base and hoodie and the guide, wearing his down jacket, could not believe I wasn't cold. This is truly a wonderful layer for hiking. So I was DEVASTATED to find that the waist strap on my backpack had worn a small hole in the front, in only a week or two of use! I've sewn it as best I can, so don't think the hole will expand, but now there's a minor flaw in the horizontal stripe pattern and some annoying thread knots near my belly-button.
