Comments about REI Telus Rain Pants - Men's 34" inseam:
These pants use Event. Have an Event jacket as well as a Polartec Neoshell jacket. Aways favor the Neoshell jacket for activity since it is not nearly as crinkly and stiff. Had an all day outdoor competition in what was to be a complete downpour in the low 60 degree range. Was desperate for decent rain pants in a hurry and these were all I could come up with at the local REI Store.
Not crazy about store-branded clothing and was hesitant to put this kind of money into another Event item instead of Neoshell. Moreover I knew these were on the heavy side which concerned me knowing temps were to be in the 60's (could picture sweating to death in these with moisture unable to escape in the rain despite the Event).
Boy were all my assumptions wrong.
-No doubt due to the face material being so nice these were far less stiff than my Event jacket (flexibility of material very close to my Neoshell jacket although not quite equal). These proves that you have to consider the face fabric as much as anything when considering Event vs Neoshell.
-My legs did not overheat in these at all. No rain made it through during the 8 hours of on and off play and I never felt sweat on my legs all day. Don't know if my legs stayed cool enough to not generate sweat or if the pants breathed so well I never felt any develop. Either way I was impressed.
-My Neoshell jacket wetted through although that was likely because I played with the hood down all day so I'm sure I took in plenty of rain around the collar.
-While these feel closer to a typical ski pant in weight, I still felt relatively unconstrained in movement. I don't have a scale with the right range to check weight but I'd guess these are pushing 18-20oz. Even so they feel surprisingly good at least in the 60 degree range with significant activity.
-These get an A++ for quality of materials, quality of sewing, zipper quality and overall design. Material feels extremely durable although I was not hiking with them sitting on rocks, etc. A well-designed but subtle velcro-type belt arrangement allowed me to have the 34 waist pants better fit my 33ish waist.
I'm extremely finicky about my performance wear but these earned my highest recommendation.
Feels true to size
Feels true to length
