by Wannabe Outside-rfromSolid all-around winter jacketA great all-around winter jacket. Quite warm, truly waterproof and windproof (tested in a bitter winter storm!), and the extra length in comparison to typical ski jackets is appreciated on very cold days. Easy to regulate body temp with the pit zips and chest pockets (chest pockets not as effective releasing heat as the pit zips). Hood is nicely insulated, and can be tightened down easily when not wearing a helmet. Great storage too, with hand warmers, flap pockets and chest pockets on the front, in addition to mesh pockets and zippered phone/media player pocket on the inside.
Be warned: This jacket runs big. I am 6' 5" and 260 lbs, with a 38" sleeve and 52" chest. I typically wear XXL for the proper chest and sleeve length, but I swam in the XXL Artisan. It is simply HUGE! Sleeves too long, and the body was far too loose around the middle, with no way to draw it in other than at the bottom hem. I exchanged for an XL, which fits perfectly.
I dinged the Artisan one star for the powder skirt. It's a bit flimsy, can't be removed, can't be attached to pants, and doesn't store out of the way easily. It snaps into two hideaway pockets, one on each side, but the right side continually unsnaps and hangs down. My basis for comparison is an OR Igneo which has a much better, sturdier skirt design. It's a relatively minor annoyance in an otherwise great all-around jacket, but you may want to look elsewhere if you ski serious powder.
The camel color with blaze-orange trim isn't for everyone. I happen to love the combo and I've gotten several compliments on it (even if two of them were from hunters who dug the safety orange!). But my wife is not a fan. So, there you have it.
