Think armored troop carrier, but for your water. These Nalgene bottles are like a tank. Big, strong and resiliant.

When hiking/camping, though I always carry a CamelBak in my pack, I also carry a wide-mouth Nalgene, which easily attaches to a pump water filter, should I need to refill when a water source is found. Drinking from the bottle is made a bit easier with a Guyot silicone splashguard (item 729119), as it slows the flow through the bottle's wide mouth. A narrow-mouthed bottle would make for easier drinking sans mouthguard, but a narrow-mouth bottle cannot be attached to a pump filter.

The markings on the side are incredibly handy when you're rehydrating freeze dried meals in the wild. No need for a measuring cup when you can easily see how much you're pouring out of your vessel right into the pot.

I often use my bottle for everyday drinking, even when I'm nowhere near a trail. Might pickup a 48-ounce version too, since more water is better, right? I recommend tossing this guy in the dishwasher on occasion, though, as bacteria can accumulate over time, especially near the top.

My only gripe: I'm not too keen on the grahpic printed on this spring's design. I'm much more fond of the one used on the bottle I purchased last year: the tall/skinny trees w/the REI logo near the bottom. Now, the bottles feature only the REI logo.. which just makes my bottle look like a billboard. Nevertheless, I might still pick up one of the new neon orange-colored bottles. Saw it in the store just the other day. One of those, combined with a headlamp, might make for an interesting 'lantern' of sorts this summer..
