My experience was with a road bike. I wanted either a hybrid or hardtail that was versatile. I looked and researched a LONG time. Finally, I discovered the Karakorum 1.0 (and at a great price). It is great for urban riding, able to push big gears for speed/interval training on asphalt or on the way to the trail. My very brief off-road experience is that it is solid, I love being able to tune the RockShox front quickly, and the Deore/XT combo is responsive and I am finding my best combination. Upgrade the seat and the grips and you've got a very respectable, solid hardtail.
