Comments about Arc'teryx Altra 50 Pack:

The design of the pack is based on the Altra 65, and it's a great pack design. The suspension system however is based more on that of a book bag or daypack. I was looking at this pack for long distance hikes and possible use on the AT, but the suspension is not comfortable enough for day-in, day-out use. I don't think it would be even good for a weekend trip unless you were carrying 15 lbs. or less. I thought this pack had a similar type of pivoting hip belt and comfortable shoulder strap suspension as on the Altra 65, but it DOES NOT. (REI take note: how about showing a photo of the suspension system like you do for so many other packs?)

The hip belt is somehow fused to the pack body, is immovable, and the hip belt padding is inadequate at best, wimpy, almost non-existent. The length of the padding on the belt barely wraps over the hip crests at all. The same type of thin foam is used on the shoulder straps also.

Considering this is part of the award winning Altra pack series, and it has a 50 liter capacity, I was expecting a suspension system that could carry at least 25± pounds...maybe even 30. The pack itself could hold this much stuff easily; the pack body, hood, and other components are rarin' to go. If only the suspension could keep up.

With a better suspension system and with the option of adding a little more volume with the top sleeve (I'm thinking resupply here), I would have kept this for sure, even if it weighed a few extra ounces. I'm looking for a light but comfortable carry. As it is however, I'm returning this and looking for another pack in the 50-60 liter range.
