Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Right Out of the Box I have narrow feet with low arches, and usually have a difficult time finding shoes that fit--so I resisted buying a pair hiking boots for a long time. But I needed a pair of boots that could handle ankle-deep water. An REI team member introduced me to these; they fit wonderfully (which couldn't be said about the two dozen other styles I tried on that day). They're sturdy and seem to have a durable build, but somehow feel like they're half the weight of comparable hiking boots. Best of all, they're comfortable right out of the box and didn't require any breaking in. The waterproof Gortex liner works great, too. I stood for over an hour in a fast-moving streambed with water up to my ankles while photographing cataracts and waterfalls--and my feet stayed dry and toasty! This was the primary factor driving my purchase, so it was a relief to see the boots actually work for their intended purpose. One caveat--the traction didn't seem as "grippy" at first as I'm used to from other hiking shoes, so it took some getting used to. But I figured it out within the first hour of use; it was just a matter of learning how to interpret what my feet were sensing about the terrain. A note about sizing and color. First, sizing: I normally wear an 8 or 8.5 in most women's shoes. For sneakers, running shoes, and hiking shoes, I'm generally a 9. But for whatever reason, these worked best for me in a 9.5. That's a long way of saying--the sizing seems to run on the small side. Second, color: I have these boots in the grey and magenta scheme. On the website, the grey has a much more tan or cream undertone; it's closer to a true grey in person.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light and Sturdy These are very light but extremely supportive, especially for ankles! They did not need to be broken in before backpacking and were supportive enough for a heavy load but light enough that I didn't feel weighed down. They are sturdy and extremely comfortable - the kind of boots I want to wear every day just because they feel so good. I can't wait for my next hike, just to wear them again!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from solid performance I bought these to replace a pair of hiking boots that had worn out. The newer version of my old brand didn't fit the same - too snug in the toes. What I like about the Lowas is the way they hug my foot more through the arch and mid-foot and have more room in the toes. Very comfortable right from day one. The only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 is that the laces tend to loosen up around the ankles when hiking on uneven terrain. I mostly do short hikes - 4 miles or so - so not that big a deal but a bit annoying considering how good they are in other areas. The boots are very light-weight, but feel sturdy, and my feet have stayed dry though I have hiked through some pretty heavy slush. I have only had them a couple of weeks but am very happy so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight and great Busted these boots out for their maiden voyage on a 9-mile day hike near Portland. It was an incredibly rainy day and the boots held up great. Stayed dry, incredibly comfortable, and I had no issues with discomfort due to the first use. I would recommend to anyone looking for a comfortable waterproof boot. Only con is that they did seem a bit large for size, but I appreciated the extra toe room, laced them up tight, and wore thicker socks without any issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleased so far. I have only worn these on a few short hikes, but they have been great so far - kept my feet dry through muddy, wet terrain, and quite comfortable - the only rub I had was a result of my sock, not the boots. I'm very pleased.
