I'm going to just state the simple fact about these shoes......AWESOME!! I've been a fan of Merrell for years & decided to give these a try. How to compare? Well....they are definitely not your average hiking boot......very lightweight, cool, quick drying (not waterproof) & awesome ventilation. My hiking boots & Keen sandals have a tendency to get my feet hot & sweaty on summer days so these are a nice cool alternative.

If you plan on using these for quick day hikes or short backpack trips (like I do) these would be ideal. I wouldn't put any more than a 20 lb load on them unless you want to start feeling some leg pain.

Even though I think these shoes are one of the best, there are a few things to consider which may not make them ideal for everyone. First, ankle support is pretty minimal. Shoes do feel kind of big at first & I debated about exchanging for smaller size, but in the end I was eager to try & kept my 10's. I'm glad I stuck with my usual 10's, keep in mind your feet will expand slightly when they get hot. Lastly.......It may just be me & I kick debris up a lot or else it's the "down to Earth" barefoot feel but I have a tendency to get a lot of trail debris inside these shoes. Nothing to override the pros but the presence of debris can be felt.

I use these shoes for hiking and some trail running.
I love that I have finally found a shoe with enough room in the toe box to accommodate my toes as they spread out when I take a step. I wish they came in narrow sizes as they are still to wide in the heel.
