I've owned many of these shorts over the past several years. This year's version introduced two major drawbacks: tightness in the butt and crotch, and repositioning of the left zipper pocket.

My old pair of size 38s were walking a fine line between comfortable and too tight, so I ordered a size 40 this time. The new shorts are actually much tighter than the older, "smaller" pair. Specifically, they are tight in the rear (I don't have a small rear, but I'm definitely not large and never have difficulty finding pants that fit).

They are also tight between the legs, meaning that when you lift your leg (e.g. to go up stairs) the shorts will ride up the raised thigh and it feels like you might cause a tear in the crotch. If you have a small butt, you may be fine standing still, but as soon as you walk you will feel the snugness.

For me, the main selling point of these shorts (and the corresponding pants) has been the stealthy hip zipper pockets. Not only does this version remove the left hip pocket, it places a new, smaller zipper pocket inside the left hand pocket. This is useless in practice because you can only use one pocket or the other — if you put something in the zipper, the item's bulk will make the regular pocket too tight, and vice versa.

Effectively, these shorts only have 3 pockets — a usable right zipper pocket, a tight right hand pocket (good enough for a smartphone, but a flip phone or wallet would bulge too much), and a tight left pocket with optional zipper.

I would also like to see another color, such as the brown that was briefly available for the pants three years ago. The light gray color is a bit lighter in person.

Hopefully REI fixes these problems (especially the pockets) next year. If you don't care about the pockets, order 2 sizes higher and enjoy the quick-drying, wrinkle-free qualities.
