I bought this a few days for going into the Grand Canyon. As a backpacker, I know never to brand new gear just before a trip, but it had to be done.
I was a little shocked at the price- like most high quality sporting goods. But I quickly got over it, when I tried the shirt on.
The neck was open enough to breath and not feel 'choked' but sealed up enough to keep the warm in. The color and pattern were good at hiding a weeks worth of backpacking, and it didn't hold odors. The thumb holes in the sleeves are well placed. This shirt holds up for being warm and durable, while being comfortable. I especially liked sleeping in it.
I even 'washed' it on the trail because everything was covered in sand. I washed in cold water, rung it out and hung it for about an hour before the wind really kicked up. Not wanting to loose my shirt to the wind, I put it in my backpack for the night assuming I'd just let it finish drying in the morning by tucking into my pack as I walked. Morning came, and my balled up shirt inside my pack was DRY!
I know use the shirt as overshirt when I ice skate. Hopefully I can get the matching pants soon.

I really wanted to like this top, but the size is way too big!!! This is supposed to be a base layer, which should be fitted, but the XS fits like a small. It is way too big in the chest and long in the sleeves. I've had the same problem with other REI products, which I end up returning due to large sizes. Since these tops run big, I wish they would provide an XXS.

This is an excellent all around mid weight base layer, which is why I call it the "everything" layer! I am an active person, and I expect the items I buy to stand up to lots of different terrain. First, this shirt was comfortable from the moment I put it on. I had plenty of room in the shoulders, the sleeves were long enough, and the bottom hem came far enough down. I love the fact that it comes in colors other than just black! As I look through much of my workout attire, layers and jackets, I notice I have a ton of black. Now it's nice to have a splash of color with the purple and teal of this particular shirt. So far I have worn this as an everyday shirt under a jacket or under another top layer. I wore it hiking and trail running, kept me warm while wicking away any moisture, dried fast once I was finished. I just used it for an Outdoor Crossfit workout on its own with no top layer, it was great. I was able to focus on my workout, because I was not distracted by a poorly fitting garment. Once my Crossfit workout was done, I pulled another jacket on over it before I got too cold again.
I can't wait to put this to further tests, hoping it holds up well to lots of use and lots of washing! The price point was not too bad, considering you could easily spend way more on a Smart Wool, Patagonia, North Face, or (here in SoCal) Lululemon layer. At under $50 I am likely to own several of these shirts for sure. Thank you REI for another quality product!
