Rated4out of5byTim1fromnot badI have used neoprene (Desente)with plastic bags, and 'waterproof' tight rubber booties (VAUDE Wet Light Bike Shoecovers). The neoprene with the bags may have worked the best between these two so I was quite hopeful with these Castelli booties.
I rode for about 20 minutes in a hard PDX rain where there was plenty of standing water on the road before these started letting the water in(fenders and mud flap). Felt like it came from the top down, like ran down my leg - so maybe a simple rubber band may help?
The seams along the bottom are not taped, so I sprayed them with 3m scotchguard before use, may have helped. I rode with these that morning with damp roads and arrived dry.
I have a 46 shoe and the XL is a perfect fit. Easy on and off is nice.
