Comments about Columbia Melting Point Insulated Jacket - Men's - 2011 Closeout:
This jacket is crazy warm I usually can't wear it anywhere but outside when the temperature is low because I get way too toasty in it. Which can be a good thing or bad thing depending on the jacket's use. It is great for weather that's cold & windy, but you'll probably need to layer a shell over it if there's moisture. I would call the jacket water "resistant". And since it's synthetic insulation, no worries getting it wet. It is very warm for its weight, mainly because of the omni-shield, but not because it's a lightweight jacket. I would def. call it mid-weight.
The down side is that I was planning on using this as a mid-layer for backcountry winter alpine ascents as a packable puffy for the summit. It is a little bulky (compared to other mid-layer insulated jackets) and certainly isn't designed to pack down. I've looked at a ton of jackets, and i think the Mtn Hrdwr Zonal jacket is perfect for this. Not sure if I need both the Zonal and this jacket...
FIT - I am 5'9" and 165 lbs, and the sleeves and torso were long for me. Not surprised, because I were a S (short) in dress suits. Other than that the jacket fits great. The armpit stretch area is a great feature. The armpit material, kind of a stretchy & breathable material, is a great feature.
