Comments about Goal Zero Lighthouse Lantern:

I don't typically review products but I had to add my experience with this product because the other reviews all most pushed me not to buy it but I did anyway and I am happy with my purchase. The lantern is what I expected it to be. It's not as bright as my larger and more expensive lanterns but it puts out good light (comparable to a small Coleman battery powered lantern). You want more light, buy a big and expensive lantern. If you want a good rechargeable lantern with a hand crank generator, this is your lantern. Those features make it a great option in emergencies.

With regard to the iPad charging picture on the box, if you own an iPad you know that it is a bear to charge and even more so with the new retina screen. Nothing really charges my iPad. It even takes forever when plugged in to a wall outlet. So be realistic about your expectations. The USB port is a great feature. Charge your iPod or iPhone. If your really hung up about the picture on the box, then plug in your iPad and sit there and turn the crank.

Bottom line, there really isn't anything about the marketing of this product that should raise expectations to a point of disappointment. I say there really isn't anything about the marketing because of the iPad issue but I said enough about iPads. If the description of this product sounds like something you would like, then buy it; you'll be happy you did.

            Happy camping!

Comments about Goal Zero Lighthouse Lantern:

I agree with the last reviewer that the light output is not enough, especially with the number of LEDs it provides. This might be so that it can still run on a low charge using the crank handle if the batteries are dead. It is however light weight for a camp lantern and the charging USB port is convenient however it only produces 1Amp which is not enough to both operate *and* charge an iPad (as there is one depicted on the box). The iPad requires about 2.1Amps in order to accomplish this but with 1A you could let it charge in standby mode or use an iPad in non-charging mode. The bottom of the unit also seems to be a bit flimsy so I'm docking it on durability.

The idea of putting a crank along with a hook for hanging was clever. I also like the added touch of strobing red LEDs as a locator beacon.

The versatility of options for charging are abundant and they've provided an AC adapter and a car charger as well. I have the Goal Zero 10 solar panel and am very happy with the design of that product which lead me to purchase the lantern. If they redesign this product with a brighter light output, a higher capacity battery that could also be removable/swappable, toughen up the exterior and provide 2.1amps to the USB output (or perhaps a switch to flip between 1 and 2.1) then I'd go back and repurchase this unit. For now, the one I have is headed back to REI as I'd prefer something with more lumens.

Comments about Goal Zero Lighthouse Lantern:

Fifty lumens isn't quite enough to be useful for reading at night. I understand the engineering tradeoffs, battery life vs brightness, but think that given the existence of the crank for recharging, that a 75 lumen output would have been better, or, perhaps, a way to better focus the lantern's output..

The blinking red light is a nice emergency feature, as is the ability to temporarily turn the light off by gently holding the power button down.

The other features are well thought out, it just isn't bright enough for my intended use.
