The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

Old ReliableAfter buying and then returning a few fancy wind proof butane lighters that eventually failed I contacted REI asking them to add a Zippo to their line. This lighter is the same one that millions have used for generations. It requires little dextarity to light with cold hands and will stay lit long enough to get natural tinder started. Make sure to check the flint and fill the fluid before you leave home. I use Zippo fluid because it does not evaporate and does not have much of a petrolium smell. A lanyard loop would be handy.

As expected from a Zippo! It is a Zippo after all so you know what you are getting. Works great in almost any conditions plus you save on replacement lighters as you only need to replace the fuel, wick, and flit when they run out. far more cost effective over disposable lighters. The only problem I see with it is the fuel will evaporate if you leave it sit for a while. This is not an issue as long as you are on top of it and top it off before you head out. I would recommend storing it as empty as possible so you don't waste fuel when not is use. Bottom line I want to get another one! (probably a nice one with a design) Oh and I will have to try the white gas suggestion when I take on the Colorado Trail.

NOT FOR CAMPING! Around the house..maybeI bought this lighter looking for something light weight and reliable. I loved the look and feel of it so I actually bought two. After filling both I made a bonfire in my backyard and had a blast using them both. However, the next day neither would work. I filled them and they worked but only for a day or two. After that, they were empty. I knew I had not used them so tried again and same thing happened. I concluded that the fuel was not draining or burning but evaporating. Within 2 days it was useless. I was really disappointed because I wanted to use them on a BWCA trip this fall. After researching in depth it sounds like the newer Zippos have this problem a lot and most people are fine with just filling them every few days but if I am relying on it when I am out in the sticks, I am going to carry something I can count on. While I loved the look, feel and function of this lighter, I gave it a lost score because it was unable to do the one thing I needed it to do, light. If you are fine with filling it every few days, this is a GREAT lighter! If not, then I would recommend a jet lighter or a $.99 lighter at the gas station. Hope that helps.

Great basic lighterI have explored many ways to start a fire. Some are exotic. I have dozens of spent butane lighters. This is great for everyday carry. But, most everyone knows that. These things have been around for decades and became popular during world war II.
Mine is red. Nice to keep it visable, but the red is paint and does get chiped in my pocket bumping against knife, flashlight, etc. For continued good looks one might prefer brushed chrome. The red is chrome underneeth the paint. The base metel is brass I believe. asfda
I thought I should probably buy this somewhere else cheaper, but found it for the same price at a local pharmacy, so I got it at REI.
When hiking or backpacking I might still carry fero steel, cotton/vasaline tinder etc. But, this has become EDC for me and I don't smoke.
