With a field weight of only 3 oz., the Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter Plus is one of the lightest filtration systems available and it takes up very little space so it can go on your fastpacking trips.

    • To use, simply fill up an included water pouch at a lake or stream, screw the hollow-fiber filter onto the pouch and squeeze the pouch to push water through the filter
    • Plus version includes a 16 fl. oz. pouch, a 32 fl. oz. pouch and a 64 fl. oz. pouch; collapsible pouches are made from durable Mylar foil and can be reused hundreds of times
    • Filter has a built-in push/pull cap so you can spray water straight into your mouth or use it to fill a water bottle; squeeze filter fills most water bottles in only 30 sec.
    • Hollow-fiber membrane filter removes 99.99999% of all bacteria, such as salmonella, cholera and E.coli; removes 99.9999% of all protozoa, such as giardia and cryptosporidium
    • Use the included syringe to backflush the filter to maintain a high-flow rate
    • Filter will also fit the threads on most bottles of water that you buy at a grocery store
    • Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter Plus comes with cleaning and maintenance instructions
    • Avoid freezing this filter; freezing may ruin the hollow-fiber membrane

Comments about Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter:

This is the fastest, lightest, easiest to use, and easiest to clean filter I've used! I used to have an MSR filter that weighed 4 times as much, pumped much slower, had lots of small parts to lose and was way harder to clean. This one is so simple, perfect, and easy. It's so light I even bring it on long day hikes because it weighs less than carrying a second bottle of water and it's so quick and easy to use.

I read other reviews before I bought the filter, and I went straight to Platypus bags after reading how people had had the bags that come with the filter fail. I always carry 2 bags just to be safe, but I have had no problem with the Playpus bags and the threads fit perfectly with the filter.

My only complaint is that it is hard to fill the bag from a shallow still water source. A cup would probably help, but it's not really a huge problem anyway. Swishing the bag through the shallow water works pretty well as long as there's not a lot of sediment to stir up. Oh and I wish they had an adapter to be able to squeeze water from one Platypus directly to another, or to a nalgene, or something other than the drinking cap. But overall I love the filter.

Comments about Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter:

I received mine with a small puncture at the base of the largest bag in the box. I sent it back to Sawyer, and they sent me back TWO new bags along with four 1oz sample-size bottles of sun screen and bug repellant. They said it was there way of apologizing for the bad product in the box. Man that is great customer service. Speaking of customer service, I might chime in on the conversation about mis-use of the product. The bags are very well made, though I'd imagine if someone sat on the bag, jumped on the bag, or put their knee in the bag to create more pressure (e.g. to filter water faster) that the bag would fail. I'm not saying there has not been some failed product out there, but just be aware that there is a way to use this product and there is a way to not use this product. As one other reviewer pointed out, rolling the bag seems to work better than squeezing the bag and I'd guess it eliminates some of the bag-breaking issues. YMMV

As for the product, man this thing rocks. This is SOOO much easier, faster and lighter weight compared to the MSR Miniworks (I sold my miniworks once I tried this Sawyer). Also note, you won't be buying $40 replacement filters for the Sawyer product, whereas that's exactly how much a replacement ceramic filter costs for the Miniworks.

Last but not least, this solution weighs less than 18% of the MSR Miniworks solution (and that's not including the heavy weight of a Nalgene bottle screwed into the base of the MSR Miniworks). No kidding. So if you want to cut pack weight but keep a working solution in your pack, this is a GREAT way to do it (unless you like the taste of water purifier pills... yummie... right?).

Good luck with your search and have fun!

Comments about Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter:

This product looks great on paper, but after using is a couple times on backpacking trips, it is difficult to use and not designed very well.

The biggest issue is that when you attach the filter to the included water bags, the o-ring seal inside either leaks or can get stuck in the water bag. Either way you end up with unfiltered water leaking into your clean water container. In order to make it not leak you have to practice and find the write amount of torque that keeps the o-ring from leaking without getting stuck.

The second issue is that you need 3 hands to use this with a hydration bladder. One hand to squeeze the water bag, one hand to hold/aim the filter, and one hand to open the hydration bladder. It's quite awkward.

Comments about Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter:

The bags that screw to the filtration device are not that good. I had only used the large bag twice when it busted which meant, the system was unusable unless you had a backup bag. Fortunately for me, the device screws on to other bags such as Platypus bags which I had. The bags that come with the squeeze filtration need to be sturdier or constructed better around the neck. Bottom line: The filtration part is light, easy to use, but do not use the bags that come with it.

I purchased this filter as an alternative to my heavier First Need filter. It is ideal for high altitude backpacking since it is so light and compact.

I still use my First Need in certain situations but find that I am packing my Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter more and more as time goes by.

I thought this was one great water filter. I used it last week in Hawaii. It came in handy having the extra bags to drag to camp. Super light weight and the bags were pretty tuff. I thought they would tear easily but they wont.

Comments about Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter:

This is the lightest weight quality filter I've found. I use it together with a SteriPen. It's not that I don't trust the filter but I live in Hawaii and the water has some nasty stuff in it. I don't feel it's the worth the risk after having two nasty infections from open cuts on my feet while in a stream. I haven't had a single problem with this filter. Other reviewers that state the bags break I imagine they're being too rough with it. I've used this over a couple trips totaling 10 days so far. I filter at least 4-5 quarts a day.

I don't roll up or squish the bag excessively. I simply fill it up, prop my foot on a rock and place the bag above my knee. I then use my fore arm to place even pressure on the bag while filling the bottle on the ground. I sometimes use my free hand to coax enough out of the bag to get a full bottle. It fills up water bottles faster than any pump style filter I've had and I've tried quite a few!

This is a fantastic light weight filter!
