Patagonia Black Hole Daypackis rated3.0out of5by8.
Rated2out of5byfromI really want to like this bag....I really want to like this bag. I have it in blue and think it's gorgeous with the orange trim. The 'black hole' material appears to be water resistant, but Patagonia really blew it in not making the upper zipper waterproof. Water leaks through the upper mesh material and the zipper. It's kind of ridiculous that Patagonia didn't think the one part of the bag that is exposed to the elements from above should be waterproof. I use this bag in the good weather, sometimes in the rain if I know I don't have far to go. I am disappointed in this purchase though as the bag is advertised as being 'highly weatherproof'/

Rated4out of5byfromDurable Bag!I will be honest, I got the bag to complement the duffel. Which is one of the best built duffel bags I have ever owned. Pretty much will use this as it was plainly intended. Casual knock around fun. Its lack of outside pockets limits it use to anything but a school bag and casual shopping where it will get plenty of looks!! Skip the rain!!!

Rated2out of5byfromBig!This bag was a lot larger than I expected. The opening at the top doesn't open fully to allow for good access. It's a nice bag, but not what I wanted. Returned it.

Rated4out of5byfromOnly one flaw...Ill get the worst out of the way first. This pack leaks through the top zipper in miderate-heavy rain. This isn't a huge problem for me, as its primary use has been as a school bag and a summer mountianeering daypack. If i ever encounter rain during the former use, I usually have an umbrella that solves the issue. In the Rockies I putt put my phone and GPS in the pocket of my rain jacket and forget about the leak. Everything else I take into the mountains is waterproof or quick dry anyway and even after 5 miles in heavy rain/sleet the bag does not accumulate standing water on the inside. It just wicks moisture about 1/3 of the way into the main compartment which I admit is a little annoying. Asside from the leak, this pack is awesome. Extremely durable material, makes this pack the toughest I own. I have on more than one occasion rolled it down some steep slopes and the material was literally unscathed. Good suspension makes it easy to carry 4L of water, a fleece, rain jacket, first aid, snacks, a small sack of odds and ends, and even hiking boots. The capacity is great for school days when I have to haul all my books down town. The huge main compartment easily holds my laptop, tablet, large lab notebook, a spiral, and 4 textbooks. The top compartment holds sunglasses, phone/tablet charger, and 3 cans of red bull. The front pocket is good for maps, calculators, or other thin objects. Unlike most previous bags I have used, there isnt an overabundance of tiny, useless pockets inside. I have been able to find a practical use for every storage area in this pack. All in all, this is a great bag with the exception of the leaky top. I like everything else about it enough to keep it and maybe modify the top with a storm flap or just buy a small pack cover for intentional rain exposure. Why Patagonia made every inch of the bag except the only vulnerable zipper waterproof will probably forever remain a mystery. This is also the reason I docked a star for this review.

Rated2out of5byfromDoesn't meet the Seattle rain testI usually love everything Patagonia makes, but I'm really disappointed that this pack leaks like a sieve. I used it to bike commute in the rain and it ruined my iPhone. I'm really glad I wasn't carrying my laptop! Otherwise, I like the pack. It's sturdy, colorful and there's lots of useful room inside. I can carry my laptop (on dry days!) and my work clothes and shoes without any problem. Patagonia really needs to go back to the drawing board for the leaking issue. This pack is totally impractical for the Northwest in any season. I only rode in the rain for 20 minutes and had issues. I can't imagine how the pack would leak if I was out all day, especially hiking or skiing. I'm thinking about returning the pack. If I don't, I'm going to need to spend even more money to buy a rain cover. Grrrr.

Rated5out of5byfromBest Bag Money Can BuyI couldn't disagree more with the person who wrote the one-star comment. After receiving multiple comments from random people about how they've used their Patagonia Black Hole for 8-years of mountain skiing and bike commuting, and how they thought it was the best pack out there as well, I checked the reviews fully expecting to see a hoard 5-star comments. They will come.. I tried on, or tested, maybe 20 different brands and styles of packs for use a bombproof, water resistant, and functional bag for city commuting, traveling, weekend trips, and daily use. Arcteryx, Gregory, Ortleib, North Fave, Chrome, TimBuk2, Osprey, SealLine. Nothing came close to this. This thing makes over the shoulder messenger bags obsolete because it is so comfortable and useful, and makes regular commuting backpacks seem pedestrian because it's so much more rugged and water resistant. It has more than enough compartments - outside, top flap, and main compartment with laptop sleeve. If you prefer individual pockets to hold your pens, pencils, and cell phone, go buy a Trapper Keeper instead.

Rated4out of5byfromThe best everyday bag I have ever had.I use this bag everyday to transport my laptop, power supply and a horde of papers to and from work everyday. The bag is extremely comfortable, and contrary to the other review, I find the bag to be quite easy to load and very accessible. If there were side pockets the bag would be perfect.

Rated1out of5byfromThis bag is functionally impotentI just received this bag on 3/1/2013 and I have decided to return it immediately, the bag is not natural, it does not flow with any type of daily, biking or recreational experience. Pro: appearance, the bag looks nice. Con: organization, the bag does not have any organizational harmony, there is only one quick grab compartment situated on the top of the bag and strangely enough, this small zippered compartment at the top is not sealed from water leaks, so in the unfortunate event of you getting caught in a down pour, the main compartment may get wet. Functionality, the bag does not offer any functional features, like side pockets or webbing for hiking or loops for trekking poles. The bag is not user friendly; you have to fight this bag, hold it down, and bend it backwards, just to pack it. The shoulder straps do not have any "D" rings or webs for external attachments. The bag is just a bag and is simply not functional; in fact, you almost need three hands in order to open the bag, hold it in place and pack it. Structure and Form, the bag does not have proper form or structure. One of my main grips with this bag is THE BOTTOM OF THE BAG IS NOT FLAT, it has a forward slant, so when placed on the ground, it automatically falls forward every time, making it practically impossible to pack or rest on the ground without it falling forward, you will have to lend it against a wall or something stable, this is a major design flaw. Second, the handle on the bag is poorly positioned and weakly designed, when picking the bag up by the handle, the position of the handle causes the bag to lean forward, thus adding to the already annoying forward slant on the bottom of the bag. Material, the material is durable, but it is 100% polyester, this makes for a very static-key experience. The material is water resistant which is a plus, but does not overcome the fact that the top of zippered compartment is not sealed to resist water. Finally, I would not recommend this bag.
