Nice and big for long trips. Easy to fill with ice or whatever you need.

Comments about REI Wide-Mouth Loop-Top Water Bottle - 48 fl. oz.:
This is huge... great for treating water in the backcountry. I take this and a 32oz bottle and have plenty of water for the dog and myself when we hit the trails.
When guiding trips for kids it's my back up bottle to wash wounds or refill kids' bottles.
No problem drinking from it unles you are driving of course.
Fits perfect in the REI Lookout 40 backpack side pockets.

Comments about REI Wide-Mouth Loop-Top Water Bottle - 48 fl. oz.:
Purchased specifically for my First Need XL to be able to filter and store a larger quantity of water that could be used as a source for refilling smaller containers.
It is enormous, for that reason i do not recommend drinking directly from it. At capacity it is 3 pounds and very unwieldy you will end up with more water on you that in you.
For the price of two of these 48 ounce bottles I now do not have to carry 3 32 ounce bottles.

Comments about REI Wide-Mouth Loop-Top Water Bottle - 48 fl. oz.:
For the time being I'm using it to save trips to the water cooler at work. It's the same ol hard side Nalgene bottle, only bigger. The mouth is the same as the 32oz wide-mouth and the replacement lids and accessories (except carriers) fit. I'm currently using a 32oz carrier (only to catch condensation) but I'd advise against doing this while hiking/biking/walking as it isn't secure and the balance is weird.
I could see this being a good container for instant rice/potatoes, cereal or pretty much any other bulk dry food.
Otherwise it's just a bigger version of a tried and true piece of gear.
