Comments about Exped Alpine 125 Trekking Poles - Pair:
I am not an experienced hiker, but with some fitness training and good fortune, I managed to complete the Everest Base Camp trip with REI. I purchased these poles specifically for this trip and used them every step of the way. They are very lightweight, easy to adjust and collapse down to a very small size. I depended on them and they never let me down. These are great poles.

Comments about Exped Alpine 125 Trekking Poles - Pair:
I was a little leary of these poles when I got them thinking they would not be that durable since they are so lightweight. I've now used them more than 50 days in the field - including multiple off trail days on the SHR - and they are still going strong. I've lost count on the number of times I've gotten them stuck in rocks and levered on them and they still have not broken
The tips are slightly shock absorbing and this allows them to "stick" to rocks and rarely slip which is great when travling off trail.
They collapse to a small enough size that you can run with them without having to put them in your pack.
Exped makes some really great products and I highly recommend them.

Comments about Exped Alpine 125 Trekking Poles - Pair:
We just returned from a week in the Smokys and could not have had a better hiking pole. I recieved these just prior to our departure after months of trying to find just the right pole. The balance between adjustabilty, lightness and strength is found in the Ex Ped's. Not once did the adjustment slip.
I promise you will be thrilled with this selection.

Comments about Exped Alpine 125 Trekking Poles - Pair:
I've been using various trekking poles for the last 10 years, from the heavy-duty antishock style to carbon fiber. These are hands-down the most well designed poles I've encountered to date.
The locking mechanisms at both points are excellent. The bottom segment simply clicks in place, and is only meant to provide collapsibility, not adjustment. The pole will not slip at this point. The upper segment has an ingenious design, which utilizes indents at 5cm intervals. This allows for the light-weight twist design, while preventing the slipping that is common in previous twist-lock poles. It also allows for you to have both poles at precisely the same length easily and quickly. The first time in the store both mechanisms seem a little odd and cumbersome, but don't let it scare you off. After your first hike, these will be the fastest collapsing poles you've used.
As for weight, I believe these are the lightest poles you can buy (aside from single section carbon fiber). You will notice the difference, particularly at the end of the day when your body is drained. Hold an extended one side-by-side with and extended antishock pole, the difference is amazing.
The extended grip has also come in handy, I use it far more often than I would have thought. Another indicator of the amount of thought that has gone into these.
Lastly, I did research Exped a little when I was looking into these. They are a small group of outdoors folks, doing what they love. I was more than happy to support them.
As was mentioned in the previous review, the only downside is the small size of the tops. A larger, smoother surface would be nice, especially for the descent. However, it is a minimal issue, and I certainly wouldn't buy something else because of it.

Comments about Exped Alpine 125 Trekking Poles - Pair:
I'm value driven when it comes to gear. For years, I used a ubiquitous retailer's poles with great success, other than the weight. It's tough to beat $20 for a decent set of hiking poles!
Finally, I decided to splurge on some lighter, nicer poles. The first ones I tried (outfitter's brand) were much nicer, but failed on the first day of a backpacking trip after only six months of use. I decided I wanted to look for the best design rather than going with the same old ideas and just hoping for the best. Exped fit the bill.
After these arrived, I almost sent these back because I tried them out in the living room and they began to flex when I placed most of my 200 lbs on them. However, when in normal motion, even when "pole vaulting" down a steep trail, they held my weight just fine. (I e-mailed the company about my concerns and received a prompt, detailed reply.)
My main frustration with most hiking poles is that they rely solely on friction (internal or external) to hold them in place and tend to either collapse or present difficulties in tightening/loosening. The Exped poles click into place on the bottom section, and use a very clever idea of slight detents in the top portion so just tightening them a little provides full support at precise intervals. No more fiddling around trying to figure out which worn-off mark you're trying to align to.
Their video is a little misleading about how much tightening the upper portion requires in order not to work loose, but it is still an order of magnitude less than regular "twist to tighten" poles.
The only down side I've found is that the tops could be a little wider/smoother/softer. I'm a "palms-down" pole user when going down a steep slope, and the tops of these aren't the most comfortable I've encountered.
Other than that? Perfect!

Comments about Exped Alpine 125 Trekking Poles - Pair:
They are really light and pack down small, which is great for backpacking.
I also like the new locking feature, which makes adjusting them way easier. The locking system can be a little tricky to figure out at first but once you have it they stay in place and don't collapse on you like some poles do.
So far they have been great for backpacking and snow shoeing. Way better than my last set!
