I bought this product because it used AAA batteries.
For a multi-day trip, using a home charger for radios is not an option.

However, these radios are not interoperable with most FRS radios because they didn't include CTSS
which is a feature that creates the feeling of sub-channels. Example, many ski areas now monitor 9-11.
This radio can only transmit on channel 9 but it will not break squelch on "subchannel 11" so you will not be heard. Radios that adhere to standards should implement in such a way that it will interoperate with others in case of emergency.

Thanks REI, I returned it with ease but it was a pain to find out how lame the product was

I took these radios to an event with LOTS of radios. One of my radios was getting constant interference on every channel and never left RX mode. It could still receive and send just fine but the constant static was unbearable. The other radio worked fine, though the speakers were too quiet to hear over all the other noise.

It is lightweight and small enough to bring along on hiking and backpacking trips.
It is cheap enough not to worry about it when in the wild.
As long as you have reasonable range expectations from a device of this size/weight/cost, you won't be disappointed.
When in the wild, and cell phones do not work (as they usually don't), this is a great way to communicate with your buddy leading/sweeping the hike or with your friends on the other side of the camping ground.

Conveniently enough, the radio uses AAA batteries - most likely same batteries you have in your headlamp.
With moderate usage, one set of batteries will last as long as inside of your headlamp...at least a few trips...
