Comments about Black Diamond Octane Pack - 2011 Closeout:
I decided to upgrade from my 20+ year old Dana Design Colter because I wanted a daypack that could more easily accommodate a hydration bladder. This is what I would call a larger daypack (or it could be considered a small overnight bag) and it is a bit large to use as a running pack.
I felt the pocket design and over-all design was quite functional. The way the hip belt attaches to the pack, allowing movement, is brilliant (it really works). I'd like to see more than one pocket on the front of the pack (there is one on the front of the hip belt but I'd like to see two hip belt pockets and also some on the front straps). The pack is a relatively heavy and actually weighs a bit more than my "ultra-light" full-sized backpack - but it is extremely comfortable - highly recommended.

Comments about Black Diamond Octane Pack - 2011 Closeout:
snagged this with my REI dividend last time around. Thought it looked a little gimmicky but I have been looking for a good sized daypack and smaller overnight pack. This fit both needs.
As soon as I tried it on I couldn't wait to hit the trails. This pack has been great for day hikes. I have been able to scramble, climb, run, and watch out for my 3 year old son unencumbered by the pack. It really lets you move.
I have not tried an overnight yet but will in October. I have packed it though and was able to fit my gear in and keep right around 25 lbs with the following:
REI travel down
REI Passage 1 w/ footprint and fly
MSR Dragonfly w/ 11 oz fuel
GSI Outdoors Halulite Microdualist Cookset
Rain jacket and atom LT hoody
Sawyer squeeze water filter
2 L camelbak in hydration sleeve
2 32 oz nalgenes in side pockets
Food, headlamp, first aid, etc.
Throwing the list in so people can get an idea of what it fits. I use sea to summit compression sacks to get things down to size but the bag is roomy. The stretch sleeves are also very roomy and the angle of the side pockets is perfect. Also, having a little one, I really appreciate the easy access hip pouch. Can't say enough about the bag and for the life of me cannot figure out why REI can't move them. Your gain if you pick one up. I talked my buddy into grabbing one when it went under $70 for a few days.

Comments about Black Diamond Octane Pack - 2011 Closeout:
I've always had achy shoulders and back after carrying a heavy pack. After the first day of using it (a little bit of hiking and rock climbing), I fell in love with this bag! I had pain free shoulders. I'm only 5'2 and medium fit me quite well (it all depends on your torso). The suspension system is quite amazing especially when you're hiking rugged terrain.

Comments about Black Diamond Octane Pack - 2011 Closeout:
Overall I have no complaints about this pack. It holds everything I need for a day out climbing and then some. The pockets make it easy to organize and get to any small items I might need to easily access, ex. first aid kit, tape, sun block. The only down side I have found is that there are times when I am hiking and it makes a squeaking noise in the hinge at the hip strap. It can be a bit annoying.

Comments about Black Diamond Octane Pack - 2011 Closeout:
This is, hands down, the most comfortable pack I've ever used. I was a little skeptical about the ergoActive thing at first, assuming it was just a gimmick. It really works though, and is notably more comfortable than any other pack I've used. Also, for the listed volume it can hold a surprising amount of stuff. I got it to use mainly as a daypack and overnight pack, but I think I might be able to use it as a multi-day pack with a little tweaking to my packing list. The side pockets are extremely stretchy so each side can easily hold a 1L nalgene. The back pocket is the same way too and can hold tons of stuff if you need it to. My only complaint about this pack would be the top pocket is a little small, but that's a minor quibble. The best part is definitely the suspension though... if you've never tried an ergoActive pack, give one a shot. Its really made my hiking and backpacking trips a LOT more pleasant.
