Comments about tubus Cargo Evo 700c Bike Rack:
I could have still purchased the older version but read that the Evo version has an internal rust inhibitor, improved dropouts, improved attachment system and is stronger. Other than the rust treatment, I am not sure the Evo version is much of an improvement after having just installed one.
I don't really need the instructions, as do most people, but like to follow them just in case. They specified Torx 25 bolts were included but mine came with Torx 20 bolts which is ridiculous since 25 is the standard and found on most multi-tools. But it looks like Tubus changed gears in putting the parts together since these ended up being extra and all of the bolts used were M5. Not a big deal but it could be a hang up for someone who is not mechanically inclined and never before installed a Tubus rack.
What I appreciated about the previous version were the eyelets at the bottom where you could mount your fender stays. This was really handy on bikes that came with only one set of eyelets on the rear since the rack would use these and you had to either mount the stays on the outside of the rack, if possible, or in between the rack and the frame which isn't a great idea due to the added leverage on the bolt. You are not able to mount fender stays at the bottom of an Evo rack. On the older racks you could also attach the part which raises and moves the rack back if you needed to. Nice if you have a 26" version rack and now want to use on a 700c bike or if you want to increase your heel clearance if only by a little but sometimes that is all you need. Again, this is not an option on this rack as well. I also kind of prefer the older attachment system probably because I am used to it and I don't see the benefit of the new one other than I read it is lighter.
Tubus is the standard when it comes to bike racks and if this is your first Tubus, you will have nothing to compare it to and it will be great. This review might benefit those who are debating between the older version and the newer one. If I had known the above prior to buying this rack, I might have opted for the older model but I am biased, of course, since that is the one that I have always used and therefore am familiar with.
