The Ortleib Vario QL3 Backpack pannier offers easy conversion between backpack and pannier, plus the delightfully easy Quick-Lock3 attachment system and waterproof protection.

  • Made of tough, longlasting waterproof nylon fabric, it features a roll-top with rip-and-stick closure and offers space for files and up to a 15.4 in. laptop
  • Low-profile and easy to use, the Quick-Lock3 (QL3) attachment system allows quick and single-handed pannier or pack mounting and removal; rack sold separately
  • Included backpack system features a padded back panel along with adjustable shoulder and sternum straps, keeping the Vario comfortable carrying it off the bike
  • Mounting hardware for a rear bike rack is also included, completing the pannier-to-pack functionality and allowing you to easily adjust pannier positioning
  • Helmet carry loop holds your helmet when its not on your head; top handle doubles as part of the QL3 engagement system and as an easy tote handle

I've been searching for a perfect bag to get my stuff (change of clothes and a lunch) to work for a long time. I did the messenger bag thing for a number of years (Timbuk2, would still recommend it) but I wanted to get the weight off my body and on the bike. However, when I get to work I still walk a few blocks to the gym so carrying a standard pannier was too awkward (Avid). Then I tried the supposedly water proof double pannier from Timbuk2, which I returned because it leaked.
The Ortlieb bag is everything it says and more. It's so comfortable as a backpack I think I'll start using it as a day pack. The quality of the attachment to the rack, the seams, the straps is phenomenal. I expect this pack will outlast everything but the frame on my bike.
