Comments about REI Montour Travel Jacket - Men's:

I bought this jacket as a replacement for a similar REI jacket I really liked. it met all expectations except it doesn't have a big cargo pocket inside and the body of the jacket is too short to keep rain off upper legs. Otherwise I think the jacket is a great casual wear itm and I would definitely get another.

Comments about REI Montour Travel Jacket - Men's:

This is my second Montour jacket. I originally chose this style (and then repurchased) because it works well with shirt/tie/slacks, not too outdoorsey but still fit for wet and moderately cool weather.

In particular, I like that the four external pockets are hidden, that the sleeves are straight cut with the elastic bands hidden INSIDE, that the hood is zip-off removable, and that the non-elastic waist is short / sport cut.

I'm 6' and a touch under 200#, normally wear a 42" suit coat and 34/35" sleeve length, and this second time around picked a Medium sized Montour to give me a slimmer cut. As such, the jacket is fine for traveling to and from work with a dress shirt and tie underneath, a cell phone and keys in the pockets. The sleeve length is "just right" for this decidedly non-sporting endeavor.

Had I wanted this jacket for more out-and-about activities, with the option for thicker layers underneath, the Large size would have been a more suitable choice.

I use this jacket (and the previous one I owned) year round in the moderate weather of the San Francisco area, where a "severely cold night" is in the mid-30° range. And believe me, this jacket alone is not suitable for enduring warmth in anything below 50°F. But for rain and wind protection? You bet!

There is one quality control concern to pay attention to. My first Montour had an annoying sleeve/cuff seam that did not stay folded flat, and I noticed this was true of some of the current season Montours on the rack at my local stores. Hard to describe, but the seam should be hidden just inside the cuff, and on some jackets, it's "rolled out" -- it became a constant irritation on my first Montour, a quirk I'm happy to be rid of.

The fabric has been improved on this generation. My first Montour pilled up across the shoulder when I sling my bag (actually, where the rubber-padded strap rests), leaving a black shadow across the blue fabric. The new fabric is smoother and appears less resistant -- if not immune -- to pilling, not to mention has black streaks of color already "built in" to the blue background, so should the problem re-appear, it wouldn't be as noticeable.

In summary, a quality garment for moderate climates, equally suitable for work or casual wear.

Comments about REI Montour Travel Jacket - Men's:

This jacket is acceptable for cycling three to eight miles on -5ºC mornings, & stellar if raining on those mornings.

A significant con is that the jacket is not breathable. The average person or cycling commuter will have no problem; the jacket lining airs out rapidly in the office or cafe. Athletes or those who sweat should consider looking elsewhere for more breathable models.

The trunk of the jacket has room for a sweater underneath. This jacket is designed to resist weather, not maintain heat.

The main selling point is the durable make, mid-range styling, and quality proofing from the rain and wind.

I wear a lighter jacket or thermal under and I have no issues in the snow.

Comments about REI Montour Travel Jacket - Men's:

Another reviewer wrote "after years of wearing technical gear around town, i wanted something urban, stylish, and understated, yet with good wet weather performance. the Montour delivers" I agree completely.

Since I live in Atlanta, I rarely need a real winter coat so wore a North Face rain shell for my main jacket with layers beneath if needed for all purposes - to work, around town, and outdoors. But even though where I work is casual, this was really too technical looking especially for an old guy like me so I wanted something that would still provide wind and rain protection, with a removable or stowable hood and that did not look like a plastic-y rain shell. This jacket is perfect.

And it's not just that it is looks better than a thin rain shell but provides excellent technical performance and the material has the look of a fine suit jacket. I got the pine color since it was on sale and actually did not much like the look of it at first (but since I am still more for function over style, I did not really care). However, after a few days I grew to love it and think it looks really classy.

The only downside for me is that I am an XL with 33" arms so the jacket arms were way too long. This is not an issue with elastic cuffs, but with these I had them shortened at a tailor by about 3". Cost $20. Now it looks and fits perfectly.

The other benefit of this jacket is all the pockets. I love having three zip chest pockets (two outside, one in) in addition to the waist pockets and the two stretchy stow pockets inside. I walk my dogs after work almost every day in the woods on steep trails and often wear this jacket, and carry some gear like gloves, knife, flashlight, headlamp, headphones, a thin extra layer etc. While I would not wear it in really rough terrain or for trailblazing, it is perfect for most suburban outdoor pursuits, too.

Comments about REI Montour Travel Jacket - Men's:

I gave this jacket to my husband as a gift. He was looking for a slightly dressier waterproof, warm jacket to wear in the city for errands, casual events, etc. This just fits the bill. It's a bit more stylish than a standard parka but has all the same advantages. Note: my husband is tall and slender. He needs a Large for arm length but the chest is a bit big on him. This isn't a negative, just a fact. It's an issue for him with most clothing. This jacket probably fits most men true to size.

The true test to me was when I went camping on the coast for a few nights in the pouring rain and was the only one in the group who stayed warm and completely dry. I thought to myself "i should give this back to my dad and buy my own;)
Really just a great coat, looks good and totally water and wind proof.

Comments about REI Montour Travel Jacket - Men's:

Excellent jacket. got this on sale for a cool price. after years of wearing technical gear around town, i wanted something urban, stylish, and understated, yet with good wet weather performance. the Montour delivers. it arrived just in time for a 4-day storm, so i had a chance to test it under critical conditions. i actually got caught in a downpour the first day i wore it. water beaded right off, and it didnt get too hot inside. i walked into a cafe, and the clerk asked me where i got it from. that let me know it was a keeper right there. the next day i got caught in an even heavier downpour. the jacket got pretty soaked, but i stayed dry. it dried pretty fast, too. it's not as bombproof as my gore-tex mountain shells, but should do just fine in the city and occasional light trail use. since it's just a shell, its not especially warm. so you need to layer under it. so far i've tried two fleeces and a down sweater with it. it works well with a heavyweight fleece over a thin merino baselayer. besides the look--the pictures dont really do it justice--the jacket is pretty well-designed. the hood adjusts from the back, as well as the sides, which is a plus. i also like the spandex/fleece inner cuffs which seal out wind. there are two upper chest pockets, two zip hand pockets, an inside zip pocket that's big enough (just) to hold an airline ticket and a passport, and two mesh backed pockets.the lining is a mix of tricot in the body, mesh in the lower body and shoulder, and nylon in the sleever. this keeps it breathable and easy to layer under. it also has a wind flap behind the zipper and a detachable hood, which is good if you want to wear it for dressier occasions. there is tricot in the collar and behind the chin flap for comfort. the poly fabric is fairly quiet, and seems tougher than it looks. the "black"--actually a dark grey solid plaid pattern-- is very understated and very refined. another plus is only one logo, a subtle black "E1" screenprint on the right sleeve. there are really only two design flaws: the upper chest zips really should have been waterproof; the flap angle means water can seep in, so that's not where you want to put your cel phone in a heavy rain. also, the cuff design, which folds in on itself and is stitched to the inner cuff, tends to ride up, which means you have to poke it back into place. if REI would have triple-stitched the inner part, it might have curbed this tendency. i'm going to have to be careful about this, especially when wearing a big watch, as this will probably be where the first signs of wear show. i'd also like to see REI offer this coat in a slightly longer length, more like a trench coat. overall, though, this is just what i wanted. it's less appealing at the full price, but for what i paid, i'm happy.
