I brought this on a two-month backpacking trip in Chilean Patagonia. It was fantastic. I used it for every situation that involved me needing to dry off - showers in hostels, going to Anakena beach on Easter Island, drying off laundry, etc. The only reason I stopped using it was because I spilled sludgy powdered milk in my tent and used this for clean up. It didn't recover well with the ambient heat... I would (and might) buy another one. Though the full size isn't necessary.

I bought this towel because of how small it folds for packing. I use it as a privacy mechanism for when I need to change clothes on trips, and I get just as much coverage as a regular towel. I've also used it after showering, and it absorbs every drop of water. It also dries quickly, and then you can fold it back up and fit it anywhere. Great Purchase!

very good towel for the YMCA, I swim around 3 times a week. compact and gets the job done. feels like a car chamois, but now i have gotten use to it. I have the other REI green XXL and i think this size is perfect. The reason i gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because i have not owned it long enough to comment on its durability.

The size is perfect for shower towel. It is plenty long and just wide enough to wrap around an average-sized woman's body to walk out of the shower. I am 5'8" and this worked for me. The material is soft and quickly soaks up water, then drying just as quickly.
DEFINITELY pre-soak and wash well separately before using. I ordered the purple and per another user's review I began hand-washed it prior to my trip. It literally turned the water dark purple over and over again. However, after that initial washing, it has not appeared to bleed so it should not be an ongoing problem.

I mostly use these towels for camping and travel. They are compact, soft, absorbent and dry quickly. I'm really happy to finally see the purple and blue colors. The old beige, orange and green were really drab. The new XL dimensions gives the extra fabric needed to wrap around your body better than the old size, but still long enough for full coverage. Good job REI!

We purchased several of these for a camping trip and they exceeded our expectations. They pack small, absorb well, and dry quickly. Would be great for a gym bag as well. I recommend the XL for an adult. The L is good for a child.

I bought this so I can travel with a smaller luggage, and it's great! It's so compact that I can pack it into a purse. It also doesn't take much space to launder.
Even though it's size XL, this is actually the same size as a regular bath towel. It's SUPER absorbent, and the surface is smooth like suede/velvet. It reminds me of those wipe cloths for glasses.
I just wish it came in less garish colors... but it's so awesome that I already have 2 (one L for hand towel) despite the colors.

I love this towel. Despite the unusual sizing, it still drapes around, which is a requirement for me. Besides the stated benefits in the product description, there's a few other tips I'd like to share.
-Excellent pillow when camping (bundled up, not folded)
-Handy pillow cover when hostelling.
-Can be washed in the sink with castile soaps and the towel remains super soft and smells good
-Fits in a quart-sized ziploc. Did not fit in sandwich bag for me
-Nice impromtu shawl, a hair band to holds the two ends in place
-Extra bedsheet - great inside my silk sheet for extra warmth

This towel is super absorbant. It dries quickly in a rather humid locker room. It is lightweight, keeping my bike load to a minimum. When folded, it fits in a ziploc sandwich bag. This towel is a perfect addition for any biker, camper, or swimmer.

Just like the first reviewer says - fantastic material. Last year's model was perfect. This year's model is shaped more like a scarf than a bath towel. There's a reason we've had these same basic dimensions for towels for 100's of years! I can see no advantage in making this long and narrow - unless you plan to cut it up to make multiple face cloths.
Except for shape, the amount of material and the material itself is fantastic. Even the colors are great. So why screw up the dimensions?
