Comments about REI Hiker First-Aid Kit - Special Buy:
This kit includes most basic items, except I added paper tape that doesn't pull hair. It's a good starter first aid kit for short day hikes. I haven't had the need to use it yet... hoping I don't need it.

We take this on wilderness trips in our kayaks where weight is not really a big issue. It has a lot of stuff we hope we will never need and we added some stuff we use regularly. But its nice to have a complete kit as a starting point.
We have the "Backpacker" and its way too much to carry for an individual or couple who are backpacking, but might make sense for a group.

Everything advertised came in the pack. This thing seems pretty handy; has pouches inside to organize various supplies. Being an amateur, I find the guide to be at least useful to those who don't have any experience in first aid, or those who need a reminder.

They call it the "Hiker", which is honestly a bit generous. I've never gone out hiking with this thing, and I'm not sure I ever will. It is a bit bulky and heavy, and I really think its a bit overkill for a hike. And to be a bit brutal, I think their whole line of first aid kits are large, heavy, and have a hard time earning a spot in any of my packs whether it be a day hike, overnighter, or proper backpacking.
BUT, this is still such a great first aid kit. It is well organized, well equipped, and is perfect for keeping in the car 24/7. I imagine it would be good for boy & girl scout trips as well or family car camping, where you will have lots of those expected injuries when you combine of children, excitement, and the outdoors.
Furthermore, it will be difficult to get all this gear without spending three times the price. Sure, it doesn't have every size and shaped bandage you could want, but it has everything you'd need. And as the supply gets low, simply restock the bag with your preferred bandages and the like, and then you can pick and choose exactly what you want and don't want.

Very nice fully equipped kit. Has room for additional items. Take out the book and it's even lighter. Slightly bulky but good for multi-day trips. Easy open and easy access to all contents

I really like this first aid kit, more so than the new version due to the layout. Items are placed in easy to find spots, unlike other kits where everything is crammed into a plastic bag and you have to dump it all out to find a band aid. Most items came in small plastic bags to make them water resistant (since the bag itself isn't…con), I took the liberty of making sure all items were in bags. Great kit!! Now for the biggest con...it's incomplete. I went through an exchange only to find out that this kit doesn't include all items listed. It's missing: 3 Sanidex wipes, 1 antibacterial wipe, 1 pill vial, 3 safety pins, pencil and accident report form. My local REI did a great job replacing the items as best they could but I'll have to replace some of them on my own.
All in all this is a great kit and has some room for expansion since not everything is crammed in there.

This is a pretty darned good starter kit or as I am going to use it as an EDC (every day carry) kit. I work outside alot and I take a pack with me every day/everywhere. Yep EDC type stuff, water, extra clothing, tools, etc. Now instead of having a couple bandages and some ibuprofen floating around somewhere in there, I have a nice little kit with all the basics organized into a nice zip-up pouch.
It has a good selection of items for general first aid (cut/smashed fingers, skinned knees, light sprains, things of that nature) plus room for extras/specifics. Which I have added for my own application/intended use. So now it's packed full (after about 10min of adding/arranging I still have everything organized and easy to find) I'm almost wishing I had gone bigger but I still need a car kit and a house kit which will be bigger and better equipped for more serious first aid needs.
I only have two issues with this kit. One, like I said I have it packed tight with things I have added and I am OCD when it comes to my kit organization. There is room on the fold out flaps above the pockets that are already there for either another sleeve or I would prefer a loop or two on each flap where I could stash an item horizontially on each side to fill out the only loose space in the bag and keep it secured (I'll be sewing in loops on mine). Same thing on the back side of the flap, it's blank? Why not make it the mirror image of the inside? Providing even more organizational ability. You won't be able to add more items but could seperate items even more.
The other thing is not one item in the entire bag (or the bag) is Made in USA. Which is a bummer.....
Overall this kit is perfect for my intended purpose and if you need a basic kit to carry around this is it but I really wish it made use of the (in my opinion) wasted space.
