Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Sliding Saw:

I wanted to review this because I saw that it was getting some unfair reviews. This is a great lightweight saw suitable for branches up to 3" in diameter. For 5oz you can't ask for a better saw. If you don't use this saw properly, the blade will start to bend and make sawing quite difficult. I have found that if you saw until it gets hard to saw, then move the saw around the limb to an uncut portion. You can cut around the whole limb to where theres only a small portion in the middle that isn't cut. You can just break this off. For what this saw costs and weighs, you can't expect it to cut like a chainsaw. If used properly, this can be a helpful tool for brining firewood back to camp efficiently.

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Sliding Saw:

When backpacking and making campfires on the trail, I need wood fuel for the fire that is larger than what I can break by hand. Axes are very inefficient and heavy to carry, while folding saws are generally lightweight and very efficient. I have purchased and used many other brands of folding (or retracting) saws and this is one of the best. I really like the size and shape of the handle. It gives you a very sturdy feeling on the hand. I found the blade to be a bit thicker and therefore more sturdy than most folding/retracting saws. The standard Gerber issue seemed to keep it sharpness longer than this Bear Grills issue, but still a trusted trail partner to help me collect LOTS of firewood VERY quickly and reliably.

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Sliding Saw:

The blade on this saw is very flimsy making it difficult to cut larger branches. The first few uses it was working well on smaller branches, after that it started becoming dull already. Within about 10 minutes of sawing branches I just went to laying them down and breaking them. I do NOT recommend this product.

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Sliding Saw:

First, let me say that I did not purchase this at REI. I actually picked it up at [@] the night before a backpacking trip just to try it out. It was practically unusable except for small sticks. I was barely able to cut anything more than 2 inches in diameter, and certainly nothing more than three inches. The blade is VERY flimsy. Also, the saw has a tendency to slip out of the notch you are cutting and seems like it could be quite dangerous. After only a few turns with the saw, the blade was bending and this made it even more difficult to saw. Since I was having to use extra force, the blade tended to slip more. I almost cut myself more than a few times. Not something you want to do several miles from your car. I really can't believe that Gerber or Bear would put their name on this thing.
