Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Series Fire Starter:

This fire starter works absolutely perfectly. It delivers reliable sparks and where you want them. Those complaining about the difficulty of use don't know what they're talking about. It isn't rocket science. There's two components and no mechanical parts. You simply strike/scrape the "blade" against the "rod" angling it over a tinder bundle and BOOM, you have fire. I've made numerous primitive fires with nothing else but this.

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Series Fire Starter:

This is a great little product, and I wouldn't want anything else in a survival situation, when it comes to starting a fire. I think these other reviews are by people who have zero previous skills, or just flat out can't figure out to use something as simple as this flint. There's a great waterproof pocket for cotten tender, two pieces slide together easily for waterproof storage, and a whistle just to add another survival tool. If you rated this a 2 star, there's not something wrong with the merchandise, there's something wrong with you.

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Series Fire Starter:

When first saw this at my local REI, I though: "what a clever idea. I am surprised no one had though of this before!". So I bought it.Even then I though the price was a little too much, but my hopes was that it would justify it's high price with its usefulness. But it wasn't hard once I spend a few minutes online researching about it, and other similar products, that there are better options out there. This fire steel, in concept, is a good idea. Carrying your fire starting tool, combined with a small compartment to keep emergency tinder (for when you can't use or don't have proper tinder), and a small whistle for signaling or alerting others on a emergency, is all great and good. And honestly I feel it could totally be done with this fire starter. But after a few months of messing with it every now and then, I've found what's the over all problems with it. The tool just ain't too comfortable to use. Striking the steel can feel awkward in your hands; and it get's worst if you are cold. And the striker they provide you with, is not very sharp, so it can be difficult to get the right angle to even ignite the steel. But again, it is do-able. And it helps that is brightly colored so you can always find it. Plus the extra signaling information in it, font fade so easy, and can help you remember it in the pinch of the moment. I end up taking mine apart, and using the whistle on a different kit. Now it is my spare fire kit, not my primary. I often more than not just let some one else carry it. Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes actually. Just because it's fairly easy to use, it comes with extras, and most people would recognize Bear Gryll's name, which makes them more likely to keep it, than if I give them a "unknown name brand" fire steel, that they might just end up loosing. The reason why I give it such low score is because I think there are better options out there. The Fire Kit from ESEE comes to mind. And for the price, you could buy 3 more magnesium fire rods and give to away as gifts. I hope Gerber improves the over all design of it. It might make me want to buy it again. But for now, I'll look elsewhere.

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Series Fire Starter:

The steel that comes with the firesteel is stainless and does not yield a good spark, the sparking is unreliable, the lanyard is too small to be worn around the neck and to large for the wrist. The lanyard also makes the using of the firesteel extremely awkward. The only positive about this was the hidden waterproof compartment in the base of the firesteel.

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Series Fire Starter:

Picked this up in store, have not had to use it in an emergency yet, but I feel comfortable that I could if need be. Playing with it in the fire pit I got a good spark off it consistently and I've never had an easier time starting a fire with out a match or lighter. The only reason I can't give it five stars is that the tool can get bent with rough usage and it's already becoming difficult to fit it into it's case.
