Comments about MSR Alpine Water Bottle:

I wanted a good water bottle for work and day trips, to avoid creating more waste, and steel to avoid the plastic taste. This bottle suits my purposes very well.
The top is simply threaded, and requires cranking it on a bit to seal. The threads seem to match the traditional Nalgene bottles. Having to apply a little force may be a drawback, but having every surface exposed and reachable for cleaning is a big plus in my opinion. If something were to happen to the lid, replacements can be readily had.
The small drinking port is a little awkward to open and close. Here again, I'm willing to put up with that because it's easy to clean.
I'm not sure about backcountry use. Metal bottles transfer heat and cold very efficiently, so there'd be a greater risk of the contents freezing. Also a bottle freshly filled from a mountain stream will give your hand a good chill.

I was in need of replacing my trusty Nalgene water bottle. As I was browsing the selections, the MSR Alpine water bottle caught my attention because it carried the ideal size 1L, shape with the triangular taperd bottom (easy fit), and stainless steel. I was hesitant to buy it at first because of the "leaky" review comments here and elsewhere and price, but the alternative stainless steel bottles were either too small or too big (40fl oz). Taking a bit of risk, I bought the MSR bottle anyway, and since then I have been pleasantly surprised. For daily use, and stuffed in my backpack, I haven't had "leaks" issue so far. It is very easy to clean because of the wide mouth as opposed to other stainless steel bottles. The only negative I could see is it takes some attention and effort to open the small top-off within the bigger lid. Other than that, this is a very good water bottle for daily use.

I can't speak for the adaptability of this bottle to other MSR equipment, but i'm sure it works well. For what I paid for this bottle though I would really hope MSR would have thought of everything to make this a nicely sealed and user friendly bottle. The small drinking port has a beautiful o-ring that seals in all liquids but the large opening that screws onto the actual bottle has ZERO o-ring and thus will leak liquids when moved around. Short of using meachnical advantage to colse the lid, it will leak everytime and it could have all be solved by a silly little o-ring or silicone filled trough ring. What a shame.

The thing I like best about this beside the integration with MSR filters, good quality, or nice feel of the stainless steel is it's shape! The online pictures don't show this good, but the bottom of these bottles are about 40% more triangular witch helps torque the top on and off with wet hands or gloves. It fits perfectly on my MSR MiniWorks filter. The mouthpiece top fits tight and dosen't leaks witch is good, but the only CON I have is the tab to push the top open is a bit too small for me and can be hard to open with one hand sometimes and you need two hands most times too close it back.
