I bought the "flame" version for my four year old son for before a trip to Yellowstone last summer and it worked out great through that entire trip. My daughter (6) also has a prior model year mini-mule (from 2010) in pink.

I love these packs.. but they are small! That's not a bad thing, as long as you know to expect it, but they are small enough that an average 3 year old could wear one comfortably, and no one ran out of water on any hike we went on, and there was plenty of room to stash a few snacks and their rain jackets.

My ONLY gripe, although it wasn't enough to warrant returning the pack, is that the painted flames began to wear off the pack the very first day after we bought it. So the newer red pack looks older and more worn than our older pink pack does.

I would recommend carrying at least an extra bite valve - my daughter ended up putting a hole in hers at some point in Yellowstone, which we fixed by just having her turn off the valve, but it was a little inconvenient to have her keep doing that. There are enough small zippered compartments inside that stashing an extra inside is easy.
