Getting ready to walk the El Camino in Spain next Spring, bought my hiking boots in Sept.to make sure they fit good, don't give me blisters, and are well broken in. Wearing them now every other day for my early morning walks.

Comments about Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Mid 2 GTX Hiking Shoes - Women's:
I have tested these boots - I took them on the Wonderland trail - 93 miles, 22,000+ elevation gain with a 25-35lbs pack.
Pros: Going downhill my foot almost always slides into the front of my boots and slams my big toe against the tip of the boot. I tried bigger boots, smaller boots, tighter laces, looser laces, inserts. Finally! These boots keep my foot from sliding!
They are also waterproof. Lots of stream crossings prove this. The water proof part dips further down than you'd think, however, so it is fairly easy to accidently step in water that is too deep and get water inside (over the top).
These boots are super light weight - but that also means they are not as luxe or cushy as you may be used to! I didn't get a single blister during my 93 mile hike (I did tape my heels before we started).
The laces are super fast! This is super nice if when you just need to get out of the tent to pee.
Cons: There is a seam down the center of the heel. Come on Solomon, that is a terrible idea! I got lots of blisters, no matter how many times I wore them. I finally just started putting athletic tape on my heels before starting hiking to take care of the issue.
The included insoles SUCK! They are made from two types of material, and where they meet (around the bottom of the heel) the insole would eat my foot. I replaced them with 10 dollar insoles and the problem was fixed.
The light weightness of this boots means there is less padding. Any backpacking day over 10 miles my feet would ache - this is bound to happen, but happens faster in these boots. However, I think it is totally worth it for the light weight!
Overall: If you have issues with your foot sliding forward in boots, try these! It's worth buying the different insoles and taping the heels each time if my toes are saved from all the pain I've previously experienced! If you don't have this issue, I wouldn't buy these boots.

Have been out on a few hikes with these and so far, so good. They are very comfy, and I walked through a shallow river in them and my feet did not get wet at all! The soles aren't as grippy as the Vibram soles on other boots I tried, but they still worked fine out on the trail. I love the lacing system and my feet were very comfortable over the course of 2+ hours of hiking.

Comments about Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Mid 2 GTX Hiking Shoes - Women's:
I purchased these shoes in April after many people tried to talk me out of them, telling me they were too light duty. I tried 6 others before coming back to this shoe. The fit is incredible (went down 1/2 size due to length) in that it hugs the arch, heel, and ankle just right without feeling tight. The cinch laces seem to snug it in all the right places. Toe box is roomy enough for my wide feet, and my toes never hit the front of the shoe on downhill hikes (mostly because my foot is held in place so well). I am a light to moderate hiker that detests stiff leather shoes, so these fit the bill. They are flexible, yet have incredible support. The greatest feature, is that I was able to wear them out of the box without any true break-in time. Though I mostly do shorter hikes, these held up without a snag on back-to-back 8 mile hikes including very rocky mountain terrain, loose rock, and snow. The true test will be South Sister next week, on which I am told the scree will eat my shoes alive! I'll report back with an update.

Comments about Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Mid 2 GTX Hiking Shoes - Women's:
I switched to these boots from a traditional mid weight leather hiking boot and I was a little nervous at first. But I love these boots for their lightweight comfort. I feel like I can do anything, the weight is so liberating. The traction is great and the toe box provides plenty of room. The speed lacing system is awesome especially with the pocket for storage (but it blocks the top row of laces). The soles are too thin for rugged terrain but after-market insoles add extra protection and arch support. The weight of these boots makes a huge difference when you're gaining a lot of elevation, like when I hiked the Grand Canyon Rim to River and back. Also on the steep descent I had no toe pain, like I had with my traditional boots. My one complaint with these boots is that they're not as breathable as I would have expected and, unlike my traditional boots, my feet feel "swampy" after a long hot day of hiking. But otherwise an excellent lightweight hiking boot.

Comments about Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Mid 2 GTX Hiking Shoes - Women's:
These shoes are the most comfortable hiking shoes that I've had. They are light weight so I get more wear out of them than other hiking shoes that I've had. They are also extremely well-made. I'm very happy with these shoes.
Service and delivery comments:
REI customer service is the best. If it hadn't been for my REI representative I would have bought the wrong size shoe. She was very helpful to me and a pleasure to buy from.
My shoes arrived promptly and in good condition.

Great shoes from the first wear. Kept my feet dry walking through creek beds in AK. Very light and comfortable. I found the sizing to be like a running shoe, needing a size larger than a dress shoe.

Comments about Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Mid 2 GTX Hiking Shoes - Women's:
I bought these because they were super lightweight, were comfortable from the get-go, and I love my Salomon trail running shoes. As with most Salomons that I've tried, they tend to run big. I'm usually an 8 1/2 with shoes, all my Salomons including these have been 8s with plenty of room in the toe box on downhill.
First time out of the box, I wore these on a 14er hike. They did great on the way up, plenty of traction, great fit, no rubbing or blisters, No water leaked in from a stream crossing. By the time I started navigating boulder fields on the way down, my feet started to hurt. My feet were sore from a night in heels the night before, so I attributed the soreness to that.
Second time out in these boots was another 14er. Same deal on the way up. Good comfort, lightweight, no rubbing. Loved the toe protection for when I wasn't paying attention and tripped on rocks. On the way down, again mostly over loose jagged rock, my feet started to hurt. There just isn't enough support in the sole and in the lower part of the boot to handle the rougher terrain. When I took them back to REI, the sales guy in the shoe dept said they are really trail shoes that just come higher up on the ankle and aren't built with true hiking boot support. I suppose for longer walks and easy terrain hiking they'd be fine, but for the Rockies (and in a couple months, Kilimanjaro), they weren't going to cut it.
As long as you know what kind of boot you are really getting, I think they seem well made, are certainly comfortable with no hot spots. They just aren't forgiving on jagged rocks over long hikes.
