I primarily use them for warm weather snowboarding but they can be used for anything where you want to keep your hands dry. As others have said they do not breath at all, i commute with them when i have too and because no air gets through even in low to mid 40's my hands sweat. They are completely waterproof as long as the liner that is squashed in between in inner and outer sides of the glove is intact. If you get pin holes in the waterproof liner if will leak. Yes the outside of the glove does absorb water but and can be rung out but it stays dry inside unless you sweat enough to make it really wet. They may do better in the very cold but since it doesnt get that cold in san diego i cant speak to that.
