In awarding its 2012 Gear of the Year Award, Outside magazine said, “The Igneo has all the features you want in a sleeping bag, and lacks two things you don’t: extra weight and a high price.”

    • Further, “The … real standout feature was the new waterproof coating … designed to repel condensation without the weight, bulk, and annoying … crinkle of a waterproof shell.”
    • The REI Igneo 3-season premium backpacking sleeping bag features goose down insulation and a waterproof, breathable shell fabric for slaying cold nights in the backcountry.
    • Tested by an independent third-party lab using European Norm protocol, the EN temperature ratings allow direct comparisons across brands with other EN-rated bags
    • Waterproof, breathable shell fabric is an ultralight, coated ripstop nylon designed to dissipate moisture from the inside, repel moisture from the outside and keep down dry
    • 800-fill-power goose down is efficiently distributed for maximum warmth and compressibility; ultralight polyester mini-ripstop lining has a soft hand-feel
    • Exclusive REI Down Fill Calculator optimizes the amount of down per baffle for the most warmth with the least amount of down
    • 60% of insulation is put on top of bag where it contributes the most warmth and loft
    • In-the-round pattern wraps vertical baffles around perimeter of sleeping bag, from head to foot, creating a 3-dimensional bag that wraps you in warmth
    • Performance fit saves weight by reducing girth at shoulders, hips and lower legs while increasing thermal efficiency
    • Baffle spacing is optimized to keep down in place and prevent cold spots
    • Multichambered contour hood, insulated full-face muffler, puffy interior yoke, and full-length zipper draft tube with ground-level seams all work to keep heat in and cold out
    • Trapezoidal footbox mirrors sleeping position for room to move and thermal efficiency
    • External chest pocket keeps small essentials—headlamp, watch, glasses—right at hand and easy to find in the dark
    • Includes nylon stuff sack and large cotton storage bag
    • Differentiated drawcords (1 round, 1 flat) allow quick identification, even in the dark, so neck and hood adjustments are a cinch
    • Any REI backpacking bag can be zipped to any other REI backpacking bag because of the consistent 63 in., No. 5, YKK zipper; women's bags zip on the right, men's on the left
    • Zipper is backed by a wide, welded fabric flap that prevents snagging
    • Pad loops provide attachment points to keep your sleeping bag and pad together, so you needn't worry about rolling onto the cold ground (straps sold separately)

Comments about REI Igneo Sleeping Bag:

I've been dying to use this bag since I walked out of the store with it. I can't speak to the durability of the bag or how well the outer shell material works in wet conditions, but this bag performed perfectly on it's first trip to the Utah desert. It made a noticeable difference in my pack weight and freed up a ton of space inside my 60L pack because it packs down so small. The zipper does tend to snag as mentioned in some reviews, but not more than is to be expected with a sleeping bag. The only thing that I think is hard to truly appreciate about this bag without sleeping in it, is how narrow the bottom portion of the bag is. It doesn't bother me, but if you like lots of leg room, this bag probably isn't a good choice. Also the draft yoke seems less functional if you roll onto your side. At the end of the day, I think REI did a fantastic job with Igneo.

Comments about REI Igneo Sleeping Bag:

Replaced my Big Agnes bag with this one. I was worried about not having the sleep for the sleeping pad, but had no problems falling off the pad. Bag is warm (especially the foot box), and packs very small. I am 6'2 225 pounds.. so I am a bigger guy and the shoulder and chest area are still comfortable. I was worried because this was my first mummy style bag, but really like it and had it out on 2 high 30 degree nights with no problems.

Comments about REI Igneo Sleeping Bag:

This is my first sleeping bag of my own, and I knew I wanted down. But I was a bit unsure about the waterproof coating - would it inhibit breathing, and would it really do anything? Well, I've since used it in pretty cold weather (low 20s) and it stood up to it well. I was just a little chilly. But the real test came during a backpacking trip this winter break. In Arkansas with my buddies, the weather hit HARD. I'm talking tornadic, lightning flashing, rain dripping from the tent ceiling. I was really worried my bag was going to soak through - why oh why did I choose down? Well, I woke up in the morning to find my bag was almost completely dry, and hadn't lost any loft. I was astonished. This bag is the one to get, ladies and gentlemen. It's not for winter pursuits, I'd say, but really you should be going way warmer and synthetic for that, but for a 3 season bag for backpacking, this one is almost perfect. Highly recommended.

Comments about REI Igneo Sleeping Bag:

Though it's not available online, I found one of these in my local store. I tested it along with the EMS Mountain Light 15 and the Marmot Helium MemBrain. It was significantly lighter than the others, at 1#13.7oz, even lighter than the 1#15oz advertised! Probably as a result, it also seemed to be significantly less warm than the others. The two drawcords are differently shaped, it has loops for securing to a sleeping pad, and it has a small pocket - all nice perks. The unusual "draft yoke" seemed to work well when I was lying on my back, but I don't know how effective it would be through a night of tossing and turning. It seems like a good bag, very lightweight and compressible, but I went with something warmer.

Comments about REI Igneo Sleeping Bag:

I have been camping for a long time and just got into backpacking, this bag is great. It packs into a compression sack about the size of a football and lofts really well when out. I am leaving soon for a 5 day backpacking trip through the northern Appalachian trail and excited to use it. I have already backpacked through 11-13000 feet peaks in the rocky mountains with this bag and it works great!

It will keep you plenty warm. Woke Up on a rainy morning at about 11500 feet with high humidity and condensation on my bag but was completely warm and it didnt penetrate the shell.

Definitely a solid buy if you can get your hands on it.

Comments about REI Igneo Sleeping Bag:

I've taken this sleeping bag out on two backpack outings so far.

It compresses well and the REI spec sheet is accurate. In 35F nights, this bag kept me very warm. I actually woke up due to being too warm and had to open it up some to ventilate.

The waterproof material is great and even if the bag gets a little damp, it soaks up sun nicely to dry out quickly.

For the price in the mid-range of backpacking sleeping bags, this one delivers.
