The sporty Scott Sportster 55 bike offers a hybrid platform to swiftly transport you to your destination, doing so with a comfortable upright position, suspension fork and disc brakes.

Aluminum frame is lightweight yet sturdy enough to tackle rough urban environs or pleasant rides in the countryside
Flat handlebar creates a comfortable, upright riding position that enables heads-up visibility
SR Suntour NEX 4110 suspension fork provides 63mm of travel to soften out bumps and jolts
Shimano triple crankset powers 24 gear choices to ably handle almost any grade; Shimano trigger shifters deftly guide the derailleurs through each gear
Shimano mechanical disc brakes deliver controlled deceleration and stops, even in wet weather
Large 700c wheels with plush, semislick tires cruise along easily for a swift, sporty ride
Frame eyelets accept fenders or a rear rack (sold separately); replaceable rear derailleur hanger helps extend usable life of the frame

After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. I bike mostly in the city and near the lake. The fact that the bike is hybrid also allows you to go off the road from time to time. It's perfect for me, and it will be probably good buy for most people, who want to ride on paved roads but also off roads.
The bike is relatively lightweight. The price is good. The design is ok. I really like that there are a lot of different speed combinations. The front suspension is decent.

My wife picked this bike out at the REI store after test riding a couple of sifferent stles. She really likes the way it rides and thinks it is quite comfortable. Even though it is a few sizes small for me, I have taken it out with our 2-year on the back in a kiddie seat. Even for me it is quite cushy and comfortable. We are happy with the purchase.

Works great as a commuter bike. Has shock absorbers on the front which make it good for pot holed streets but do add to the weight a bit.

I ride a few miles to work everyday and a few trips to the store. I come from riding an aluminum frame road bike and the 55 is far more comfortable. I arrive at work feeling refreshed instead of stressed as I don't have to dodge every crack in the road. The upright position makes scanning the road ahead more comfortable and helps make me more visible. The adjustable fork takes out just enough of the bumps without feeling like you're out at sea. The XL frame fits me nicely at 6'1 and is light enough to hang up with one hand at the end of the day. One thing to note is that Scott designed fenders (called the Urban-Kit) specifically for this frame but unfortunately REI does not carry them yet (but neither does anyone else). This bike doesn't have the greatest components but the frame, wheels and fork are all well suited for my purposes. A lockout on the fork would be nice but I don't feel like I'm losing any pedal efficiency. I like the color scheme and the look of the bike. I've had more than a few inquiries and everyone thinks it cost 2-3 times as much. Overall very happy with my purchase.
