Comments about Big Agnes Copper Spur UL4 Tent:

Just got back from camping at 8500 feet in the Eastern Sierras. Had two days of afternoon hailstorms with very strong winds. No leaks, no fails. Never been in a hailstorm in a tent before. Excellent product, plenty of stash spots, easy in and out.

Comments about Big Agnes Copper Spur UL4 Tent:

I wanted a tent that was as light as possible for a 10 day trip with my family to the Wind Rivers. There are four of us (2 boys - 1 is 5.4) so this was perfect for us. Divided up about a pound each (well, the 8yo carried the ground sheet). Plenty of room with some packs in, some packs out. Rained every day after dinner, never a wet spot. Vestibules are very roomy. The wind blew hard sometimes above 11k with no problems. I have MANY(9)tents and this is my 1st four person...after the reviews of other 4p tents I was nervous about space. I CANNOT reccomend this tent too strongly...especially if on sale!

Comments about Big Agnes Copper Spur UL4 Tent:

This is a great tent. Purchased it prior to a 5-day backcountry canoe trip and to have for later backpacking and family camping. It got a pretty serious test in its first trip. On our first night in BWCA, we got 8" of rain that caused flooding in nearby Duluth, MN. The tent did awesome. Zero leaks anywhere. The only issues we had were condensate on the inside of the vestibule that would drip when the tent got bumped. We had to pack the tent wet, but set it up at the next campsite and it dried up quickly. Otherwise:
              - super lightweight for a 4-person tent, but seems pretty sturdy
              - will be tight for family car camping, but more room than our previous Kelty 4-person tent
              - pole design is nice to allow for pretty vertical side walls in the tent, making it feel pretty roomy
              - we didn't get to test it in heavy wind
              - good ventilation

It was not an inexpensive tent, but I plan to use it for 10+ years. Based on my initial experiences with it, I would highly recommend this tent to others.

Comments about Big Agnes Copper Spur UL4 Tent:

Please note that this is a review of the 2011 model.

We were looking for a comfortable but lightweight tent, which would allow us to stay within the weight limits for baggage on the flight. Comfort is important for us and my husband is 6'04" , so we picked the Copper Spur UL 4 as a 2-person tent. We had ample space and could keep all our gear inside the tent, which turned out to be a blessing.

We camped first near the beach on Long Island, NY where the nights were very misty, so we had some condensation collecting under the tent. Normally we didn't have to care about it, because it would dry during the day. However, one morning a heavy downpour started to shake lose the condensation and drops were falling on the mesh. First we were wondering if the tent wasn't holding. Yet as soon as we wiped off the condensation with a tent sponge, everything was fine.

Then we moved across the bay to Watch Hill (Fire Island, National Seashore), where our tent made it through its first thunderstorm — and it did exceptionally well. I checked the weather statistics when we arrived back home: The wind was 20 mph with gusts of 30 mph. First we got nervous, because the tent started moving even with far less wind, but that seems to be by design. Because it is so light, the tent flexes under the gusts, but it always returns to its original shape. When the pressure got very hard, we gave it a little hand here and there, but it was holding. At some point, we had half an inch of water in the vestibule and water collecting in the sandy ground under our tent, but the floor hold 100% tight.

We used sand stakes for the floor (sold separately). That wasn't absolutely necessary because it was just sandy ground, not pure sand. However, the larger sand stakes were helpful during the storm. Moreover, we were glad to have the original footprint. Usually, we just use a tarp as footprint. In this case, we think that the additional fixation for the poles in the original footprint helped the Copper Spur UL 4 to weather off the gusts.

The next morning, we were among the few on the whole campground who were still dry and we had zero damage to the tent, nor our gear. That's definitely worth a five star. Bottom line: the Copper Spur UL 4 is the perfect tent for fly & drive luxury camping.

Comments about Big Agnes Copper Spur UL4 Tent:

The first time we set up the Copper Spur, it was a breeze. It couldn't get much easier. The points of connection are well thought out and easy to use.

The tent is roomy. It will easily shelter four adults. There are eight mesh pockets for stashing small items such as headlamps, decks of cards, books, etc. Because the walls are nearly vertical, it's possible to sit up all the way to the edge. The two vestibules are handy and also easily large enough for shoes and packs.

The quality and design really shine. This tent is really well thought out and well put together. The DAC poles are light and strong, the stakes are small and light, but still do the job well. The tent body and fly are ultra lightweight, but seen tough. Time will tell.

Big Agnes has done it again. This is a wonderul tent. You pay for what you get, but will enjoy it every use. That's what I'm planning on anyway.
