Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Women's:
We bought this backpack for a smaller size hoping to make things more comfortable for my wife to help her get a backpack that fit her hips and shoulders. Had good fit and was comfortable. We questioned the size of it being 40 Liters and did not have enough room to pack her items for this particular trip because we had to pack a little extra for the cold we were facing. Also, did not like the fact that there was no separate sleeping bag compartment which she has on her old pack which meant she had to pull everything out at night to get to her sleeping bag. Otherwise, it was a good bag and she enjoyed finding a pack in a purple color. Returned the pack for a no hassle return and traded it for another pack that we hope will be better on our next trip.

Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Women's:
The Lookout 40 for Women is designed so that the shoulder straps are set a tad more widely apart, making for a more comfortable fit. The backing breathes well. The hip suspension has no where to be tucked into or hidden away, so it just hangs there when not fastened (which for me is most of the time). One drawback is that it looks bulky, and people notice that..."wow...you're packed up!" even if it's just a quick day hike. It's roomy and light with good access. The inside mesh zip pocket is shallower than I expected, but handles a small wallet and sunglasses fine. The top "stash" zip pocket is great for quick retrieval of cell phone, ID, chapstick, etc.

I will be taking this pack up Mt. Kilimanjaro with me. So far this daypack has been perfect for my training hikes. I can fit all of my rain and cold weather gear with plenty of room to spare. There are lots pockets which makes easy to keep my gear organized and easy to access. It also holds my 3 liter water bladder. This pack is so comfortable and supportive. I really love the egg carton padding along the back!

Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Women's:
I've been through about 4 backpacks in the 30-45 liter range, longing for the day when one would stand out as my soul mate. The day has arrived! Below are all the various ways I have used this pack in the past month.
I went to a conference in San Francisco and used this pack as my carry on and to take my daily items to the conference center every day. It worked quite well on both counts, although if I had to say it has ONE negative aspect, it would be that when stuffed full, it is difficult to fit under the plane seat in front of you. I wasn't really bothered by this though, and it would have fit in the overhead compartment just fine. The small pocket at the top was perfect for keeping my conference badge and wallet in.
After the conference, a fellow outdoor enthusiast and myself took advantage of our proximity to Yosemite and drove out there for a few days before flying back home. I used this backpack as my hiking daypack and I have never been more thrilled with a pack. My FAVORITE thing about it is the vertical side pockets. As a map geek, I have never liked having to keep my trail maps in the "accessible" small pocket on the front of the backpack where I have to either take the pack off to access them or have my hiking partner get them out for me. These vertical pockets were PERFECT for holding my maps where I could reach them without taking the pack off or having to fold them up and put them in pants pockets. The BEST feature by far.
Finally, last weekend I packed up for a quick overnight backpack, and between this pack and boyfriend's similarly sized pack we were able to fit everything we needed for a night in the backcountry.
I admit I have not yet tested it in the heat, but the back seems like it would have reasonable airflow. I've accepted that no amount of ventilation helps after about April in Texas anyway.
Excellent pack--thanks, REI!

I bought the plum colored one and love everything about it. I had looked at many web sites for a backpack that I could use for my next trip out west. I ended up finding this one at the REI store in my city. It meets all my criteria and then some. I'm giving it 4 stars rather than 5 only because I haven't had a chance to try it out on one my day hikes in the mountains, which I will take sometime next year. Can't wait to bring it with me on the trip.

Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Women's:
I needed a backpack to go on a 2 day and a 3 day trip where I was going to be staying in a lodge, but doing a lot of hiking. I do tend to sweat, so I wanted a backpack that would provide enough ventilation where the sweating would be minimal. The way the back is, it just didn't allow enough air flow through it. The pack fit me well (I'm 5'5") and did what I wanted it to do.

Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Women's:
I purchased this pack in Fall of 11 because my old school backpack was giving me shoulder pain. This held up wonderfully-it allowed me to cary all of my school things while the straps meant I carried the weight on my torso so I no longer had pain. I am 4' 9" and I was able to adjust to it easily to fit me, (albeit it at times looked comical on me because I am so short). I have a tendency to throw this pack around and be a little absentminded, but it stood up to it's roughing. Unfortunately,I have yet to use this pack for outdoor adventuring, but I would highly recommend it for any high schooler who is looking for a backpack to use throughout high school.

Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Women's:
I bought last Fall's version of this daypack to hike the Inca Trail in Peru. We just returned, and I couldn't be happier with its performance. I am 5'7" and the pack adjusted for me perfectly. I needed a larger daypack to carry a 100 oz. hydration bladder, rain gear, cold weather gear, snacks, cameras and hiking poles. It all fit well and the pack was very comfortable. There is a small zippered pocked on top that is perfect for tissues, lip balm, etc. When not using my poles, I packed them into the side pouch and used the strap on the side to hold them in place with no problem. I used the straps on the bottom to carry my jacket when I wasn't wearing it, but didn't want to have it packed away. I even had to make use of the attached rain cover one day. It covered the entire bag and kept it nice and dry.
My only negative comment is that I couldn't figure out what to use the stretchy straps on the front of the pack for. It would have been nice to have one single strap zigzag across the front instead so you can stuff a hat or jacket in there for easy access.
Overall, a great purchase. I'll be using this again to hike Colorado's 14ers this summer.

Got this for my wife, and myself a matching men's 40. Works great for our adventure Saturday day hikes around San Diego county. Ample padding on the shoulders and back, in addition to spine contour works great for our needs.
The waist strap and shoulder tie straps work great and hold the pack in place well enough to get around comfortably. I would definately get this pack again.
The one downside is some of the exterior pocket's zippers are of lower quality, and tend to snag and grind on teeth when used.

Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Women's:
Overall, I love this pack. I carry camera gear, so I really appreciate all the pockets & being able to organize all my stuff. Perfect size for longer day hikes (10+ miles) Pack is rugged & has minimal mesh (which is easily torn on sharp rocks) so, great for scrambling too. It isn't lightweight, but is so comfortable, I don't notice. Downside is the gear loop system. My hiking poles really flop around & easily come out of it. The bottom loops aren't adjustable & for some reason, the top ones are too long.
