Rated5out of5byfromPerfect for Bike Commute to WorkI got this on sale from REI when new year model came out, so it is absolutely a great value. It is the perfect size for my 20 mile bike commute to work. I fit a complete change of clothes, shoes, towel, shower kit, ipad, iphone, wallet, headlight battery (baseball-size), and occasionally my macbook pro. It fits just right and I don't notice the weight when riding at all. Used a few times to hold / carry gear at kids soccer and lacrosse tournaments and performed well - but have not hiked at length yet.

Rated4out of5byfromLast year's model was fineTook this on a 10 day hiking trip in the Dolomites (refuge to refuge). Got a good deal on last year's model. Compared to the 2013 model, last year's bag has plenty of compartments which attracted me to buy it rather than the newer model. While on the trip, I was generally pleased with the bag but noticed a couple of things: the zipper on the top compartment kept snagging when the bag was full, and the water bottle fabric started to show abrasion tears where it kept rubbing the ground when I put the bag down, but it was still functional, though showing wear from a single trip. Still for $50 bucks, it is still worth the price I paid. The newer bag had less compartments, so I didn't buy it. I didn't think to check the material of the fabric holding the water bottles in place. Now I know the bags all have the platypus or camelback watering system, but bottles are the best b/c you can see the water levels to pace yourself and bottles remind you to drink. I would recommend the bag as an overnight or for hiking for a few days. It served me well for the Italy hikes b/c food and lodging were available at the refuges (huts) and so I only needed to pack a couple of day clothes (washed them at the refuges).

Rated4out of5byfromGood bang for the bucksI am using this pack as airport luggage and cross country travel. Awesome for this and several other functions in my opinion. Price is fair and the pack is flexible. It could use better padding on the back and better snap connectors.

Rated4out of5byfromQuality Pack - Awkward SizeI like this pack, a lot actually. It's just 40L is a bit of an awkward size. It's too large to take on a day hike, even if that may be a long one. But it's too small to fit enough for a multiple day trip. It's very deep so it wouldn't be great as a student seeing as your books/computer would get swallowed up by this thing. I do genuinely like this pack. I've used it several times and it has not let me down. REI makes great products, just be sure with the Lookout 40L that you've got an intended use in mind.

Rated5out of5byfromIt's bigger on the insideIt really is bigger than I expected. Way cool! Fits my Hennessy hammock, fleese bag, themarest pad, and change of clothes with lots of pace left over.

Rated4out of5byfromGreat Pack!Love this Pack. It'll work well for my camera equipment as well extra supplies for a day of photography. As a teacher, I bring a lot of stuff back and forth to school and this bag will work well. I picked up a padded sleeve and my 13" Macbook Pro fits great with all the power supply, cables etc... with plenty of room left over for papers and books. The long zippered pockets on the side are great and hold a lot! My ONLY frustration is the zipper on the top pocket for keys, multi-tool etc... catches on the fabric consistently, which is too bad because I use that pocket every day multiple times.
