REI Members get back an estimated $ 37.50 on this item as part of their annual member refund.

    The REI Member Dividend

The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.

Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

    • NOW PLAYING

Featuring the latest 8.2 software pre-installed, the Pieps DSP avalanche transceiver is optimized for speed, effectiveness and precision to help you find victims fast.

    • 3-antenna system pinpoints the location of burials within a 60m range regardless of antenna orientation and burial depth
    • Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology displays transmitting units as stick figures on an easy-to-view LCD screen
    • When signals are detected, the approximate distance and direction to the burials are displayed—simply follow the arrows to reach a burial
    • During multiple burial scenarios, the DSP separates the multiple signals and clearly displays the number of buried victims
    • Upon locating the position of the first victim, the searcher can mark and mask the found signal and immediately begin searching for other burials
    • Smart Transmitter works while buried by receiving signals of other burials, synchronizing them, and then transmitting a signal without any overlap
    • Eliminating signal overlap allows the searcher to quickly interpret the audible and visual information with increased accuracy and less confusion
    • Pieps DSP can measure frequency deviation of all transceivers, a great pre-ski tour test to conduct
    • Knowing the level of deviation present in a transceiver allows a party to thoroughly assess transceiver operation prior to heading out
    • Scan function quickly narrows the field into 3 distinct search ranges and returns an overview of all buried devices within each range
    • Special fourth antenna checks the frequency of the other 3 antennas to ensure the beacon is functioning properly
    • Adjustable, nylon harness with pouch keeps the unit secure and accessible
    • Compatible with all beacons operating on the 457 kHz frequency
    • Change modes to search for a dog wearing a Pieps TX600 Dog Avalanche Rescue transmitter (sold separately); TX600 transmits on a different frequency than avalanche beacons
    • Can be used with the Pieps iProbe (not included); iProbe can temporarily suppress the signal of a transmitting Pieps transceiver to make searching for multiple burials easier
    • Pieps DSP avalanche transceiver operates on 3 AAA batteries, included

Comments about Pieps DSP Avalanche Transceiver:

Search for beacon reviews and you will see this unit is highly rated.
Make sure your beacon works with your buddy's, if you are buried, they're not going to be using yours. RE: interferance, well known and documented, keep your cell phones and radios away from your beacon, and as noted a specific motorola model number that does not play well. As for other beacon's multiple signal issue noted in prior review, make sure to test with your partners.
1st attempt using at Cyrstal Mt. beacon practice could not complete, was picking up people on HC chair with beacons, so fairy long range. Fortunately have not used for actual burial search. Transmit-> search is very clear operation, multiple burial flaggin works good. Practice practice practice. Several good brands available so find one that you like, this one is good for me and I recomment. Pieps also has several complementary products so that is one more thing to consider (backup and pet/equipment beacons). Blackdiamond purchase of Pieps will hopefully mean good things.

Comments about Pieps DSP Avalanche Transceiver:

I have used a DSP for years, trusting both my own and my friends lives to its operating as expected. Unfortunately, I have developed grave misgivings (no pun intended) about this device and interference with/from other devices, not to mention its compatibility with other beacon brands. Most recently, I discovered that Motorola radios (certain models only) can switch the mode of the beacon without the wearer's knowledge: http://alaskarescue.wordpress.com/2009/01/26/pieps-dsp-and-motorola-radio-problems/. Last winter, we discovered that Pieps knows about (but does not publicize) the fact that DSP and Ortovox transcievers do not play well together - Ortovox transceivers will be shown on the DSP as multiple signals, only one of which is correct. We have verified this behavior in the field on multiple occasions now.
