I own last year's Venturi 1/4 zip, but haven't had a chance to use it enough for a review until now. This is my new favorite lightweight mid layer. (It's billed as a base layer, but runs a size too large. I ALWAYS wear a large, and the large here fit like a tent with a giant neck--in fact, it was too voluminous to offer any real wicking or warmth. I returned it for a medium, which is perfect). There is also some very slight pilling from where my car's seat belt rubs it ... but no pilling from backpacking all day with a heavy load, nor from trail running.

So, on to the good stuff. This shirt is incredibly soft--it feels like it would be shredded by backpacking or even a single spin in the laundry, but it keeps coming back for more. I wear it over my old REI silkweight top, and that's all I need for trail running and backpacking in the upper 30's in the wind. This is a very durable shirt--I often carry one of my twins in a backpack on long hikes, and they love to pull my collar (along with hair, ears, etc). After hours of being stretched (and sucked on by a teething infant), the material is none the worse for wear. I snagged it on some thorns, and like all REI gear I own, it held up to the punishment with only very minor damage (and no unraveling). I suspect it will go back to normal after a wash.

As for style, I wish REI would bring back the "mystic blue" or offer this in "bering sea." I love the new, less obvious chest pocket. I hope to purchase one of the new versions soon, but I will be ordering a size smaller than normal.
