Comments about Alpen Optics Wings 10 x 25 Compact ED Binoculars:

I looked for a pair of dual-hinge, roof prism 10x25 binos for a long time. I almost gave up, not wanting either another pair of cheap(ish) binos nor having to spend five hundred plus. I let someone convince me the Alpens were worth looking at/through and searched out a pair, and sure enough, for once they were as advertised! These are some very nice binos… They are not the equivalent of the higher priced European models, but they are also less than half the cost. For modestly priced 10x25's in a package as small as they are, they represent an exceptional value. The optics are nice and bright, definition is good, contrast is good, and the colors appear natural. While people that test binos with test charts etc argue over nits with the optics in these things, the simple fact is that for most of us in most applications they are fine. More than fine, they are very good and represent a fantastic value. More so because of the no-nonsense, no-questions-asked lifetime warranty. And a quick note here: I read reviews all over the place where people are picking at compact binoculars… They're hard to hold steady, poor dim light performance, they're not as good as my (fill in the blank, larger/costlier binos.) Within reason ignore such reviews. It is physically impossible to construct a bino as small as these are with the higher power these have without making significant compromises. *Any* 10x25 roof prism bino will suffer from a small exit size (which means you have to keep the optical sweet spot directly over your own pupils or the image blurs or dims), from lack of light gathering, they will be "jumpy" (the higher power and lighter weight cause them to be apparently jumpier), on and on. If you don't want to deal with the physical limitations of a small, lightweight, high power bino, go buy a three pound pair of 10 power high quality binos. I have such a pair (Celestrons, no longer made, three times the price) and the different when A/B'ed is profound. But that's like comparing a Geo Metro to a Lamborghini. Anyways, for what they are and for an educated buyer who wants a very portable, very small footprint bino that remains optically very good, these can't be beat. I gave these four stars for value, with the caveat that if one wants the best (but only marginally better) optical quality one will need to spend more. A lot more. Several times the price.
