Comments about Old Town Saranac 146 XT Canoe - Green:
Got this as a 30th birthday gift, but I had had my eye on it. My wife and I have only made one lake trip with it but so far we've really enjoyed it. Not terribly difficult to load and carry (only weighs 85#), but at 14ft its awkward for one person to handle. Boat tracks well and is fairly stable in the water. There's decent legroom for a canoe and the seat backs are definitley a plus. The only gripe I have is that the seats dont lock into place either for use or storage. They're held in place with a nylon cord that secures with a cleat molded into the seat. Would have liked to see at least something to lock the seats down so they don't snag on my roof bars as I'm loading it. Besides that, I'm really pleased with it. I wasn't quite comfortable with the original pricepoint. REI had this particular boat in stock for 20% off on clearance and it was a no-brainer. There are similar boats sold at [@] which dont offer the padded seats that go for about $100 less. Im still not sure if padded seats and seat backs are worth $100 but Im glad I have them for what I wanted to pay. Cleanup is easy since everything is polyethylene- a hose and a towel. Im very satisfied with this boat. I dont think you need much more in a canoe unless you really just want to spend $2500 on a wooden one just because you can.

Comments about Old Town Saranac 146 XT Canoe - Green:
I used the canoe for the first time this weekend on a small lake with my wife and 2 yr. old son. The padded seats were very comfortable and the storage compartments were handy for stowing snacks and sunglasses. The canoe felt very stable, even with my son moving around the canoe. It has noticeably better initial stability than our previous 16'6" canoe. The built-in rod holder mounts on the stern and bow handles are a nice feature. So far, I am very happy with the canoe.
My only complaint is regarding the design of the lid on the center seat. On my canoe, gravity will open the lid as soon as the canoe is tipped over. This is a very minor issue but it would be nice if the lid had a better closure mechanism that kept it in place while loading/unloading. I would definitely recommend the Saranac 146 XT.
