Comments about Black Diamond AMPerage Skis - 2012/2013:

Upgrade from S3's. Ski tele, but still love the bumps. Good edge control and carve, even on the hard pack. Lively pop from one turn into the next. Really love the pop in the bumps. Just the right float in the powder. I can still get low for the face shots, but not so deep that my back knee acts like a break.

Comments about Black Diamond AMPerage Skis - 2012/2013:

I bought these as a replacement for a pair of K2 Backlash skis I returned to REI that were extremely disappointing. Michael of REI Missoula's ski department assisted me in selecting these in 175. The BD AMPerage is simply summed up in one word- FUN! A turny, carvy, floaty, fantasticaly engineered ski that is wonderful in most western conditions. It skis 18" of fresh powder with aplomb at Lost Trail, harder consolidated snow at Discovery, and groomers at Great Divide all well. I would not recommend this ski for someone who skis hard conditions most of the time- not what it's made for. Also, if you ski fast through death crud, these do not have a metal layer- try BD's Verdict or Zealot for that. These are more forgiving for those of us who like a lively, poppy and turny ski.

Mine are set up tele with BD 02's Mid-Stiff- a great combination. These skis would also alpine/at well too. Bases are FAST, especially when waxed and "run-in". As a fitting note, I went with the 175, and am 15 pounds outside the BD recommended weight range of #180, but have had no problems- I went shorter because my local mountain skis tight and technical. If I skiied an area with more wide open terrain, I would likely go 185. If you are on the fence, and in a dilema like mine, go shorter, I doubt you will regret it. I've had absolutely no problems with float or edge grip with 175cm length, and LOVE the maneuvrability.

        Service and delivery comments:

Customer service excellent, Michael of REI Missoula was excellent to deal with on the ski return and selection of the AMPerages, and very helpful!

Comments about Black Diamond AMPerage Skis - 2012/2013:

I took this out to CO and WA this month and got to test this out in varying conditions.

          At Vail/Beaver Creek:

          - The first day the snow was really inconsistent. There were clumps of packed powder spread across a lot of ice. The AMPs did not like this terrain and were really chattery. I'm sure if I was a better skier I could have fallen less but I had a heck of a time controlling these skis

          - The second day we went to Beaver Creek where the snow coverage was a lot nicer (aka less ice) and everything was pretty well groomed. I found it easy to initiate turns on the AMPs and as I got used to the size of the ski (175cm) I could maneuver it pretty well.

          At Crystal Mountain, WA:
          - It was dumping tons of snow when I went to ski. Bottom line these skis love powder! They float so nice and they're so much more composed on the fluffy stuff. I wouldn't say these are skis made for moguls/bumps but I was able to turn quick enough to get through most of the terrain. I chased a lot of untouched snow all day and was having fun doing some small jumps.

If you plan on doing mostly powder skiing with a small percentage of groomers I'd highly recommend this ski. It'll do fine on groomers but if you hit some less than ideal conditions things get dicey pretty quick (again this might not be a problem if I were a better skier). I can see why people claim this to be a one ski quiver but I myself wouldn't push that point too strongly.

As a final data point, when I got the bindings (Marker Jesters) mounted on the skis the guy said that the skis looked "very flexible with a lot of torsional rigidity".
