The Lava Red Suunto Core multifunction watch is considered essential equipment for backcountry endeavors. It provides the data you need to take on nature's greatest challenges.

Altimeter, Barometer, Compass (ABC) wrist-top design delivers crucial data for gauging performance, direction and weather
Barometric altimeter is accurate to 29,500 feet and displays current elevation and elevation gain/loss;records entire session for later analysis
Unique start-from-zero function simplifies altimeter usage by eliminating need to enter a reference altitude
Barometer function measures and records air pressure to help predict changing conditions; weather trend indicator shows history over last 3 - 6 hrs.
Automatic Alti/Baro mode senses movement, or lack thereof, and seamlessly switches between altimeter and barometer functions
Storm alarm feature activates when a rapid drop in air pressure is detected over a 3 hr. period; alarm sounds and flashes to indicate bad weather
Digital compass monitors direction; set and follow a bearing using rotating bezel ring, or point top of watch in direction of travel to lock in bearing
Sunrise/sunset times ensure you never miss another beautiful dusk or dawn; set regional data and watch will inform you how much daylight remains

I have owned a variety of altimeter/barometer watches from Casio to Highgear and none have been as accurate as this Suunto.

There have been times when I've forgotten to re-calibrate the altimeter between trips and it's amazing that the reading is still typically within 50 ft of being accurate.

Another reviewer mentioned that the log setting is not accurate as far as cumulative gain, but for me the recording of elevation gained and lost has been spot on. In fact all settings have been incredibly accurate. Even the storm warning function was accurate and helpful. I'm not a fan of using a compass on any watch (I always carry a Suunto A-10 compass - .95 oz) but I found the compass feature to be accurate once calibrated.

This watch is nicely constructed and survived lots of significant drops and hard use. I can't speak to the comfort of having it on your wrist, as I always attach it to my shoulder strap.

Elevation readings accurate, lots of nice features but log showed double expected elevation gain. Tried working with Suunto help line. Ended up returning device.

I recently put this to the test on Mt. Hood and Mt. Rainier. I was mostly concerned with tracking elevation but also used the sunrise/sunset feature to gauge climbing times. The watch performed like a pro. You really should be familiar with the settings though before going out and thoroughly understand the baro/alti differences and proper settings for your adventure.

I wear this watch daily but I bought it for use when hiking in the White Mountains and for an up and coming trip to Peru.

It's a great looking watch with a great feature set that make it helpful day-to-day and should make it useful on the trail. I use the countdown timer for keeping track of laundry and steeping tea. It's the kind of watch that makes you ignore the fact that your smartphone can do everything the watch can do better so you can justify buying it.... then it breaks.

Major Problem:
Unfortunately the barometer/altimeter sensor which also seems to contain the temp sensor has failed after less than two months of use. I baby this watch and never wear it in water. I take it off to shower, I take it off to wash dishes. This is unacceptable.

Minor Gripes:
If you're using this watch to monitor altitude changes while mountain hiking the weather needs to be perfectly steady or it will be off by hundreds of feet within a half-hour.

Also, setting the reference altitude is a pain because the numbers scroll too slowly. I've stood with my thumb depressed on the increment button for over a minute while setting a reference altitude for the first time of the day.

Temp sensor can only display your wrist temp while the watch is being worn.

You have to take the watch off to calibrate the compass.

Cliff's Notes:
It's a sexy ABC watch but not reliable or particularly useful on the trail. It's what you want, but unfortunately not what you need.

My REI dividend was burning a hole in my pocket once I got it, so I decided to get myself a new watch. I had my heart set on a competing brand, but luckily the Green Vest at the store steered me in the direction of the Suunto lava red watch. So far, this thing is great and I've gotten a couple of compliments on it already. The altimeter/barometer function is a big plus for me and I like the fact that the red ring around the face makes it stand out a little bit too.

I had a Suunto vector before which I loved, however the all plastic body didn't hold up very well over the long term. The Core is a great watch. Stronger body and a much more intuitive menu and functionality.

I've had this watch for over three months. I've run with it, and I've hiked Harney Peak with it. I find the sunrise/sunset feature very helpful when I travel. The watch is light enough to run with. Highly recommended!
