Comments about Mountain Hardwear Kelvinator Down Jacket - Men's:

Very warm down jacket at a surprisingly light weight down. Shell material all around is thin so hopefully will prove durable over time in backcountry. Have used jacket around town in 30deg temps as well on winter backcountry ski tours as insulation down thrown over shell; fit will not allow for too much bulk/layers but suffices. Stuffs compactly into a day pack. Handy interior pockets. Hood offers sufficient insulation over ski hat but not overly bulky.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Kelvinator Down Jacket - Men's:

Got this as a gift. I wear Xl in Marmot, TNF, and Patagonia. My sub zero is an xxl Mtn Hardwear. Seems that all mtn hardwears run small. One of my ice climbing parthers wears L in everything but mtn h. He has to wear xl to get a good fit with layers. I've noticed their sleeping bags run small as well.

It will replace my 12 year old TNF Nuptse. One reviewer said it won't fit over a helmet. I tried on the xl and while tight in me it fits over my petzl ecrin helmet. I will use it for backpacking, summer mtneering, and local road side ice climbs.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Kelvinator Down Jacket - Men's:

After my first outing using the Kelvinator I have nothing but good things to say about it. This is my second down jacket and this one easily out performs the Marmot Zeus jacket that I previously owned. The Kelvinator has an athlete fit which keeps heat in more effeciently than the Marmot Zeus jacket. On this outing the temps both nights dipped down into the mid to upper 20s and all I had on under the Kelvinator was a mid weight base layer and felt comfortably warm all night.

A feature that makes this jacket much warmer is the addition of a hood. The hood is form fitting and greatly adds warmth without adding a lot of weight. One thing to keep in mind about this jacket's hood is that it will NOT fit over a climbing helmet. If a hood that will fit over a helmet is important to you consider a different jacket.

Another feature that I like is the stuff sack that comes with the jacket. This serves as a perfect camp pillow when the nights aren't so cold you need to wear the jacket to sleep in.

Overall this jacket seems to be a quality product, plus with the name Kelvinator you know it has to be sweet!!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Kelvinator Down Jacket - Men's:

I would say this is one of the better choices for a small to mid size down jacket. I took a look at the Patagonia Down Jackets (I believe they are actually called sweaters), with hood and without hood. The Patagonia jackets are no where near as stylish and the hooded version's hood is ENORMOUS. The Patagonia hood is boarder line too large as you would have a tough time putting a shell hood over the down hood to protect it from the rain it's that large. However the Patagonia Jacket does have better 800 down vs. the MH 650 down which may be the reason why the MH jacket is more lofty in style. Because of the added loft, it has a better snug fit to it whereas the Patagonia jacket is very droopy and loose and does not look as fitted and stylish. However the Patagonia jacket might just be too droopy and loose on me though because I am 6'3" 185lbs.

On the topic of hoods, the hood on the MH jacket is very form fitted and seals you in without having to adjust the hood (you can't). The Patagonia hood does have draw string which are required since the hood is WAY over-sized (probably for helmets). If you are looking to wear the hood over a ski helmet, the MH jacket might not be the choice for you.

You might laugh because I keep talking about style, but that's only because I just bought the jacket and haven't put in through the cold weather wringer.

It's smooth enough to glide under any waterproof shell (required if you are going to be in the rain since it's down!), and not too bulky so you don't have to buy size up in your waterproof shell size.
