Comments about Marmot Bastione Component Jacket - Men's:
This coat should be standard issue for the Night's Watch. Extremely warm. Durable. Comes in black. What more do you need on the Wall?
Seriously though, this coat is great. After making it through the last few midwest winters with a lot of layers, I decided it was time to get a solution that didn't involve a shirt, a sweater, a fleece, and a hard shell. This coat definitely does that, and I'm very happy with my purchase.
It fits great. I wear a size small and most sportswear is a little too big in my size. This coat is perfect, but not so snug that I couldn't fit a layer under it if I really had to.
Contrary to some the other reviews, I have found opportunities to wear the three different options this coat offers. That being said, I wouldn't ditch all my other coats, but this one is pretty versatile in terms of temperature. I also have no problems with any of the zippers.
One great feature that isn't mentioned is that the pockets of the outer layer have some sort of fleece or microfiber lining. It's obviously not a huge selling point, but definitely a nice perk.
If you're looking for a warm coat that looks stylish without being constricting, get this one.

Comments about Marmot Bastione Component Jacket - Men's:
I use this jacket every day. Never disappoints. Returned my North Face Apex jacket and got this. This is MUCH warmer (4-5 times warmer if you use both layers), same if you use just one. Less stiff in the cold. More versatile. Slides on better too. This is a surprisingly non-bulky jacket. Best coat I've had in a long time.

I may need to adjust the hood, because when I flipped it over my head it felt very big. Maybe because it is meant to fit a helmet?

Comments about Marmot Bastione Component Jacket - Men's:
We had our first measurable snow yesterday and temps in single digits tonight. That means that I had my first chance to use my new jacket. I brushed 6+ inches of snow off my car in a heavy snowstorm and stayed perfectly dry (that never happened with my old NF shell). The brim on the hood even kept most of the snow off of my glasses.
As noted in other reviews, the inner liner is extremely warm, but I have found it easy to regulate my temperature using the pit zips in both the shell and the liner. I also own a Mountain Hardware insulated liner, and the fabric in this liner seems much more durable (though a little bulkier). If you live in a cold, snowy area, buy this jacket.

Comments about Marmot Bastione Component Jacket - Men's:
i got this jacket for a trip to northern italy over holidays. i lived over there years ago, and i remembered extreme cold and a lot of freezing rain this time of year. the jacket was perfect. i had a few cold, rainy days like i remembered, and on days when it was warmer, wearing just the inner shell worked fine. this jacket is more expensive than a comparable columbia, but worth it if you can afford it. one nice feature is the hood, which sticks out a bit and directs rain away from your face. between the jacket and the also awesome zamberlan boots i got for the trip, i was able to walk around in the rain without an umbrella no problem. highly recommended.

Comments about Marmot Bastione Component Jacket - Men's:
Great coat at a great price! I'm outside in the Minnesota cold (excluding this year with no temp below 20 during the day)way too often. This coat is very comfortable and warm. The quality is typical Marmot high standards.

Comments about Marmot Bastione Component Jacket - Men's:
I use this jacket regularly in the cool wet European fall and winter. The added flexibility of using the liner as a warm wind resistant layer makes this jacket a can't miss. I have worn it in a driving sleet and stayed warm and dry. Really wish it had a few more pockets on the outer layer for gear (GPS, flashlight, etc) so you can access them without taking off your pack or overloading your cargo pants. Overall, a great jacket I would recommend to anyone who will consistently be in the outdoors in less than ideal weather.

Comments about Marmot Bastione Component Jacket - Men's:
THE SHORT VERSION: Perfect casual/around town jacket, and I suspect it will do just fine as an activewear jacket for me when needed, when the temps get down into the 20's/30's, but I do have more specialized gear for winter biking/hiking/XC skiing.THE LONG VERSION:I bought this as an around-town / work jacket. I sell cars for a living, and that requires me to partially stand around a lot, combined with sudden bursts of activity, running in-and-outdoors a lot. With that said, the weight of the jacket I found to be perfect- it's about halfway between a full-blown bulky casual jacket and a jacket for proper active outdoor sports. In other words, I wouldn't want to wear it if I wanted something super-technical with good breathability, but I didn't expect to do that with it.I was skeptical because of the price- I was comparing it to 3-in-1's that were a lot more money, so I thought it wouldn't be all that great when I got it. I paid[$] for it on sale, but after owning it, I find that it's well worth the $300 normal price. The liner- this replaced my aging Mountain Hardwear Compressor PL, and it is, in my opinion, superior to the Compressor. More details to it, aside from that it doesn't have adjustable cuffs, which is no problem. Plus, it is warmer. The fact that is is warmer lends well to standing around/bumming around town, but again, might be too hot for really active stuff, until you get down to the 20-30's, but it does have armpit vents, though. I've only had it down into the 40's so far, in the 50's it's too warm for much more than walking around. Which is good for me, means it will be warm on it's own when it gets really cold. I honestly thought the liner would be cheap and not look good on it's own, but indeed it does. The shell- zero complaints- it has great water resistance and every adjustment I would want. It replaced, for me, an old North Face goretex shell, and is equally as good as that when that one was new.The cut is perfect- again, it's not a "fit" cut like the Arcteryx stuff, but it falls in line with my Marmot down vest, and as a comparison, the Mountain Hardwear Compressor PL in large was always slightly rather tight in the wrong places on me (sleeve length and upper chest), so this is better for me, but your mileage may vary.
Service and delivery comments:
Delivery to my house from REI was free, prompt, good condition. I did have to call customer service to get my member # and the person I spoke with was super helpful and pleasant.

Comments about Marmot Bastione Component Jacket - Men's:
I really like this jacket. It's relatively stylish and practical, it has a removable hood and a removable synthetic down liner jacket. It is very warm! It fits just about true to size, I'm 5'10" 155lbs with an athletic build and a small fits me snugly but comfortably. Unfortunately I haven't given it a true test of its abilities yet but we'll see how it will hold up to a Chicago winter.
