Comments about Shelf Road Climbing: A Complete Guide:
For as long as Shelf has been bolted up and for as popular as it has become, we should really expect an excellent quality guidebook for the area. Unfortunately most shelf books that I've used have been super lame, with confusing topos, missing information, and tacky route descriptions.
This new guide for Shelf features full color photos, maps, essays from prominent developers, and a host of newer areas that are missing from some of the older books. Probably the biggest challenge in writing a guide to Shelf is printing clear topos / photos, since practically every cliff at Shelf is sandy colored and a uniform 90 feet high. It can be hard to figure out just where you are if you don't have a landmark route to orient yourself. Bob D makes the best of a difficult situation with clear photos and descriptions similar to his Boulder Canyon guide (which is also excellent and only slightly out of date).
My complaints: too many routes get 3/3 stars and a "Classic!" description... they may be good but they can't all be the best climbs at Shelf. Also some of the routes are mysteriously featherbagged (see Mountain Project for more historically accurate ratings).
In any case, highly recommended!
