Comments about REI Pinnacle 35 Pack:

I use this backpack to get my climbing gear from the car to the crag. All of my gear fits inside the main compartment or easily strapped to a loop on the outside. Once I put my 60m climbing rope on the top, with my helmet, shoes, and water bottle hanging off the back, my friends comment that I look like a pack mule, but I'm the one carrying the bulk of the gear.

The smaller zippered pockets come in handy to organize little things that would be lost in the main compartment (cellphone, keys, etc.)

One of my favorite features in the zippered pocket on the waist strap. It fits my digital camera perfectly- making it easy to have it on hand at all times.

I just wish it came in a size small. As 5'4" woman, a medium is larger than really fits me properly. However, there are limited options well suited for climbing gear that come smaller than the medium, and it's certainly hard to beat the price.

Comments about REI Pinnacle 35 Pack:

I was looking for an ultralight pack that fit well, carried 25-30 lbs of gear and food, and was durable enough for occasional rock-scrambling or bushwhacking. As it comes stock, this pack isn't even close to being ultralight. But its other features alerted me to its potential, and I love a challenge.
I cut off the haul loop, and all the gear loops, even the internal climbing-rack loops. Then I shortened the straps, and removed the rope straps from the top. With the plastic and aluminium frame sheet removed, all the parts removed from the pack weighed around 3/4 lbs. So, still not ultra-lightweight by any means, but not overly-heavy either.
It's plenty tough and waterproof. The roll-top works great (though I might modify it to a drawstring...). It carries lightweight gear just fine without the frame sheet, and carries heavier stuff just fine with the extra support.
Construction and materials are top-notch, and fit was spot-on.
Fifth star missing only because I haven't had it long enough to comment on durability. I'll let y'all know if I still love it next year.

Comments about REI Pinnacle 35 Pack:

Great day pack and climbing pack. Very comfortable and versatile. It is small and light and low profile so your head does not hit it when climbing. I wish it had zips on both sides for loading and unloading. Only problem with this pack is the rear zipper is weak and broke on me. REI replaced off course but not sure when it is going to brake again.

Comments about REI Pinnacle 35 Pack:

After purchasing and returning two other climbing packs, I finally gave in and bought the exact same pack as my climbing partner. Other than the fact that we look like twins going to the crag, I have no complainits about this pack. I shove everything in the main compartment, put my guide book and a few other items in the front pouch and then use the great strap system to put my rope on top. The side zipper has saved me a lot of time and trouble pulling out an item on the bottom of the pack. My climbing partner had the front zipper bust out after 2 years of abuse. He bought the same pack to replace it.

Comments about REI Pinnacle 35 Pack:

The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because ive only used the backpack a few times. 5 stars are earned only after at least a years use and abuse. I suspect this backpack will earn the 5. I got rid of my last backpack due to zipper snagging and the lack of access. This pack has no such issues.

Comments about REI Pinnacle 35 Pack:

This is the only pack that I've owned besides a military rucksack. It is very light and comfortable. It has lots of ties to attach items. I can fit everything I need in this pack to have a successful climb. I do wish the inner pocket was just a little bit bigger. Also the zipper pocket could be a little bigger too. Other than the space it is a great pack.

Comments about REI Pinnacle 35 Pack:

I've made two ascents of the Grand Teton (August 2012) with this pack. I love everything about it with one exception: the zippers that access the two outermost pockets are too light for the job. After two trips I can no longer get the long vertical pocket zipper to function and am therefore returning the pack (see other user reviews with this problem). If REI would simply up-size this zipper, this pack would be a strong "5".

I uesd this pack to carry my climbing rack on my resent trip to smith rock. It was able to carry my climbing gear with no problem. At one point I was able to carry a 70 meter climbing rope on top of the pack by using the top straps to hold it. This is a must pack for any climber.

Comments about REI Pinnacle 35 Pack:

I bought this pack primarily for mountaineering day trips and so far have not found anything I don't like about it. It carys really well and allows for a full range of movement which is much appreciated on climbs. It will hold a lot of gear and has attachments for just about anything you can think of. The side zipper access is an excellent design element and allows you to fish gear out of the bottom of your pack without taking everything out. The pack is also solidly built and feels like it will last for years to come. I really think REI nailed it with this one. Everything on this pack is very well thought out.

Comments about REI Pinnacle 35 Pack:

I purchased this pack as my previous packages were inefficient in packing in/out my gear. So far I've had a very positive experience with this pack. My primary use of it is for cragging with trad and sport gear. I've had this pack out on a few day trips and here are my opinions thus far:

                What Ive liked so far
                - The inner gear racks (2)
                - The straps for the rope on top
                - The outer pocket size (holds a lot of water bottles, my lunch, etc)
                - I LOVE that it can hold a whole trad rack, copious anchor materials, helmet/harness/shoes, and a rope on top
                - Side access zipper to get at goods inside the pack
                - Rolltop that helps with water resistance
                - The ability to stow the straps out of the way

What I've been indifferent to/not liked
                - Only one hip pocket on one side. The other side is a gear loop, I'll see if I ever use it, but other audiences may find it more suiting.
                - The top pocket for small goods gets covered up when you stack a rope on top, you can't access without removing the rope.
                - I wish there was a side access zipper was on both sides so you could access all your gear from either side

Overall, I really like the pack. It carries well, breathes reasonably well (for the small huffs I've taken it on), and it holds everything I need. I also considered mammut's offering (Neon 45), and the MHM Salute. I think all three of those seem great, but the cost/performance/feature ratio for the REI pack won it for me. I'm really happy with it at this time.
