Comments about REI Neo Jacket - Men's:
I believe this jacket is a good value, as it serves two primary purposes... A nice lightweight Alaskan jacket from spring to fall, and a liner for a winter coat.
During the colder months I wear the Neo under my carhartt zip jacket, and find it very comfortable. The chest pocket carries a holstered Kahr P380 BUG, accessible if time/situation permits. Wearing two jackets provides me with more pockets for daily carry items, such as keys, flashlight, mace, spare magazines (x2), lighter, pocket knife, cigs, wallet, spare car key, and acquisitions, all without being cluttered - particularly if distributed between the two jackets and a pair of pants.
Even 25 above zero, it kept me warm enough standing still in relatively light wind, with only a tshirt underneath and no outer layer. But I could feel some of the wind coming through the sleeves. The entire inner portion of this jacket is lined, which I greatly appreciate!
This jacket goes with me everywhere, and I am usually wearing it. Everything from hiking, camping, atv/snowmachine, daily jogging, gatherings, etc.
The brown version seems slightly lighter in person, but not dramatically. Shell material is durable and feels nice against my hands, unlike other jackets of this style, many which feel terrible if touched due to my dry/rough hands.
The zippers have no pull strings, but rather a rubber nub on the tab, making the jacket more stream less, yet maintaining the ability to to easily grip them.
Fit is quite nice. I prefer form fitting clothing, as long as freedom of movement and comfort is catered to. The Medium size jacket looks great on a physically fit, 5'11" tall guy (me), coming from myself and many women.
I honestly can't say anything bad. I like what it is, not what I wish it was. Constructive: Make this version in a thicker lightweight canvas as well, because it would be more durable.
I bought the jacket in-store, originally intending to buy the Thorofare jacket... Out of stock I assumed.

Comments about REI Neo Jacket - Men's:
On a recent 950-mile, 3-month late Spring backpacking trip through France/Spain/Portugal, I brought only 1 jacket- this one.. with no regrets.
Pros:
-Travels Great: it's light-weight, easily packable, wrinkle-free.
-Comfortable: soft & smooth interior, wind-resistant shell, warm up to 40F degs on its own, well-fitted yet roomy enough to add layers inside.
-Functional: Excellent zippable & roomy pockets (fits my passport/journal/wallet/camera) & helps deter pick-pockets, also- love the adjustable cuffs on the well-fitting sleeves.
-Easy to maintain: Easy-to-clean shell, machine-washable, bird poo comes out very easily.
-Stylish: versatile style- I rocked it with hiking gear over the rugged Pyrenees and also with sleek semi-formal attire in Paris too!
CONS:
-Sometimes too warm: Great for starting a hike on a chilly morning but I got too warm after 12 minutes of pumped-up movement.
-Absorbs odor: Don't sit too close to a campfire or stand too long over a grill.. oh, and do take it off when you start sweating because mine started smelling like sweaty grilled sardines.
Also- excellent water-resistant jacket but note it is NOT water-proof! Works great in light drizzles or a few minutes in heavy rain.. but after a while, it absorbs and dampens. Though, I imagine it'd work great in snow.
Overall- an awesome jacket- one of my favorites.

I'm 5'9-5'10, 170 lbs and athletic build. I bought this in Medium and it fits great. This jacket has a modern more fitted style. It's not too tight, not baggy, it's just right. It's warm but breaths. Keeps the warm in and cold out without getting overheated. The inside is VERY soft! Feels great against your skin! The fourway stretch is true to it's description and handles arm movement very well without bunching up or feeling awkward. Just a great Jacket, no buyers remorse, and on sale, it's a no brainer. If you live near an REI go in the store and check the clearance racks. I did and found a couple of these, for whatever reason, priced lower than another rack that held a lot more of them.

Used the jacket in Afghanistan. It's perfect for late winter and early spring. I've used it working in and around the aircraft in temps varying from the teens in the northern region to the 50s at night where I am assigned. It's warmer than I thought it would be. It beats all my other softshells. It is always in my back pack when travelling. It also looks great. Everyone who sees me in it, wants one.

Most jackets are too much. This one is perfect for a primarily urban environment and could work on a trail as well.

Comments about REI Neo Jacket - Men's:
I have owned Marmot Gravity, LL Bean Pathfinder, Patagonia Boilerplate, patagonia windwall, north face apex stuff and Columbia. In my opinion this soft-shell, for the money is better than all of them. This jacket is as well-made as all of the brands mentioned above and better made than some. And this jacket has more features, e.g. inside pockets, and wrist closures. As an added bonus the logo is very subdued, so I don't have to be a walking billboard. Finally found a great three season everyday jacket.

Comments about REI Neo Jacket - Men's:
I bought my Neo jacket in winter 2005. It stood up to Wisconsin winters (urban wear, snowboarding, and tubing). Now living in SWVa, and it's all I need for the coldest winter days. This is the longest-lived jacket I've owned, and it still looks like I just bought it today.
It's also the most versatile jacket I own. Throw it on over a cotton shirt for a casual day in the Fall or Spring. Sizing is also just roomy enough to wear over a warm midlayer for an active day in the 20-30 degree range.
If this one ever wears out (which I doubt), I'll definitely be getting another one!

The interior headset port could be a bit more well designed. Requires care but isn't too bothersome. Very comfortable to wear. The color options are ok, they cover the basics. Map/Document pockets are useful, the depth is a plus.Sizing is decent to add layers on top and underneath. Basically the soft-shell i was looking for. Semper Fi

Comments about REI Neo Jacket - Men's:
I bought this jacket just before a 2 day hike on the AT from Carver's Gap NC to Highway 19E in January. Temperatures started at 19 degrees F the first day and ranged from 21F to 10F. I used this jacket at my outer layer most of the trip. (I would put on my REI kimtah rainjacket during the windier portions of the hike because of its hood). This jacket kept the wind and snow out. The exterior fabric is durable and broke the branches it snagged on rather than ripping. This plus 1 or 2 thermal layers was all i needed to stay warm while hiking.
About the "con":
My REI Kimtah rain jacket and REI Windbreak Thermal Fleece jacket both have a newer type of velcro that doesn't isn't as abrasive, and seems to be heartier. The velcro on the sleeve cuffs of this jacket just has "classic" velco on it. Not I big deal, I just prefer the newer type of velcro.

Comments about REI Neo Jacket - Men's:
My wife bought this for me for Christmas. I was a bit leary since it seemed to be a thinner weight coat but boy, have I been proven wrong.
Very comfortable down to 35 degrees. Fit is great, material seems to hold up well. Lots of pockets. Highly recommended.
